Thoughts on Aspen and Shop Recommendations

Is that icing on your windshield? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro -
After going through 3 major avionics upgrades, here are a few things I would watch out for. 1) Make sure you understand the difference between an estimate and a quote. I have had one shop try to increase the cost of the estimate by 50% once they got started on the plane. Their excuse was “unforeseen issues”. I make a point of it to get a quote by insisting they check out the plane before they quote it. 2) Go through the quote/estimate carefully to look for a complete job. Often they will quote a vanilla package and attempt to add on features - in other words, do your homework on what you are getting and make sure it is what you want. Like some have pointed out, a yaw damper might be a good thing to add on now, not later. 3) Many shops won’t clean up old wiring. If you are doing a substantial upgrade, insist that old wire be removed. 4) Sometimes the quote is lower because they are taking short cuts. In my case, the shop that installed the GTN and GNC 255 reused the old RG-58. I ended up running new RG-400 when I started having radio issues. 5) Agree with the shop how you will handle truly unexpected problems. A pre-inspection of the plane before quoting will help eliminate most surprises but if they encounter something that needs addressed, I’d want to make sure it got addressed and not hidden (like wrapping electrical tape on a compromised RG cable). I found the more I knew about what I wanted installed, the better the quote was. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Thoughts on Aspen and Shop Recommendations
Marauder replied to tim417's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I’ve flown behind Aspens since 2012. Mine have been a great solution for a mixed panel. And I like the approach Aspen has taken to allow you upgrade the unit without a wholesale hardware swap (i.e. a G5 will never be a GI-275 or a G3X). The upside is the Aspen will play with everything in your panel. Mine is connected to an STEC 60-2 AP, a 650, Lynx 900 and a GTN 255B. The downside is that it isn’t as integrated as the Garmin products. Garmin does a nice job of integrating their hardware - but doesn’t play well with other vendors. I would really think long term about how long you plan on owning the plane. It’s easy to go overboard on spending on avionics. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro -
Nice! What kind of seat rail pins are those? Got a part number and/or supplier? Looks like an easier solution than cotter pins. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Near Miss With Ground Vehicles at KCRS
Marauder replied to alextstone's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
Your post reminded me in the days of DUATS the constant buzz of my dot matrix printer hammering out page after page of NOTAMs. [emoji23] One thing that needs to be kept in mind is the origin of the NOTAM itself. The airport authorities managing the airport issue them. When my airport was in for a full repaving, our airport manager was constantly adjusting the “closed runway” NOTAM when expected runway reopening dates would come and go. At a nearby airport, they were repaving a portion of the taxiway and the airport manager there never posted a NOTAM but the AWOS had a warning that “men and machines were working on the taxiway”. I agree the whole NOTAM system needs to be overhauled. I thought I read somewhere that there was a project underway to do just that. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro -

Help Troubleshooting Fluctuating Fuel Pressure
Marauder replied to Ragsf15e's topic in General Mooney Talk
What is troubling me is that your pressure goes above 30 psi. I’ve never seen my pressure ever get anywhere near the max let alone exceed it. Looking at the installation manual, the resistive sender looks like something you can measure the resistance on. Did JPI ever provide you any troubleshooting guidance? I would think they know what the resistance should read across the working pressure range. It looks like the transducer for your injected engine is sold through Aircraft Spruce. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/jpifuelpressuresensor.php Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro -
Ever thought about buying a salvage Mooney?
Marauder replied to aerochet's topic in General Mooney Talk
This is what Alan Fox (the Grime Reaper) does. I think often he scraps a fair amount of scrap aluminum because it is either damaged or just too long to move. Back in the periods when Mooney was having issues, I entertained buying a scrap F model for parts. Sort of what I did for my 1974 Fiat. But the number of times I would have ending up dipping into that pile would have turned out to be very infrequent. With the exception of some specific airframe components, most of the engine and avionics are available. I think if you looked into it, having volume and willing to wait to move a lot of stuff is probably the reality. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro -
Help Troubleshooting Fluctuating Fuel Pressure
Marauder replied to Ragsf15e's topic in General Mooney Talk
There could be a few things involve. If there are no obvious leaks, here are the things I’d consider: Some sort of restriction in the sender path. Loose connections on the sender. Loose connections on the 930 side. EMI problem. Check the wiring from the sender to the JPI. I had an interference problem with my JPI that caused a radio problem. I don’t think their units are very robust against EMI. Infant mortality of that mechanical pump. I can’t tell from the installation manual but I suspect that the sensor probably has an acceptable output range that can be measured. Maybe ask JPI what they recommend for testing these sensors. Hose Diameter, Size, Length??? Plastic Part?
Marauder replied to WAFI's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Can’t help you on the black tube. Looks like there is enough room to get a caliper on the port it is attached to. The side kick panels I found came from Plane Plastics but they required some trimming. I think all of these secondary suppliers of these parts are making copies of an original. You might be able to find someone who has ones from an upgrade that is in better condition than yours. You could also try to do the plastic repair and repaint path of your originals. These panels are pretty thin and crack easily — especially when big feet hit them. If you are redoing the interior, you might want to look at the Spatial Designs alternative. Gets rid of the kick panels. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro -
The $69 kit that carusoam is showing is the kit for certified planes. It contains the fuse holder and fuse as you described. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

I flew my plane with a 6 pack for 22 years before I went to glass. There is some initial “adjustment” that you will need to do to make the transition. For me, getting used to the tapes versus the analog was my challenge. The other “adjustment” was flying behind a GPS. I flew for years with just a standard Nav/Com, ADF and heck, even a LORAN-C. There is more buttons to learn but once you get past flying from the back seat for a few flights, it becomes easier than the steam stuff. I really like the map capability. Being able to see traffic, weather and your course all on a single display is pretty nice. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

Requesting PIREP Mooney Service Center Eastern PA or NJ
Marauder replied to HIghpockets's topic in General Mooney Talk
I've used the shop on my field (N57 New Garden Flying Field) for the last two annuals (was using MSCs before that). The shop does a decent job and I haven't had a reason to not use them next year. They can handle the stuff you are looking to have done. -

Is there WiFi available at your hangar? If so, you could use a WiFi switch like this: Or if you know you’ll fly on certain days during the upcoming week, program this one for the week. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

When Basic Med was first introduced, I remember that a requirement for a safety pilot was they were required to be PIC. Has this been updated? Also, having someone act as PIC as a safety pilot may also be a concern with your insurance. Specifically if they weren’t capable of meeting the open pilot requirement. I can’t speak to what a shop will charge but can speak about the amount of time it took me and an IA friend to do it. I created this CiES resource thread to help. On page 5 I wrote up the time it took us to install the senders. It should give you a ball park on the amount of time a shop will take to do it. Hope it helps. https://mooneyspace.com/topic/23573-cies-fuel-senders-resource-thread/?do=findComment&comment=389181 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

If you have the PC disabled and it still banks, it could be a rigging issue. A major fuel imbalance could also make it bank. If you are in level flight, with the PC disengaged, do the ailerons look the same? I have had two rigging issues over the years. One caused by a flap that wasn’t rigged correctly and the other due to one of the landing gear being slightly in the slipstream. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Questions after my first familiarization flight

Sounds like some loose bushings. If the mechanic isn’t familiar with Mooney rigging, I’d find someone who is. He should be checking the pre-loads as well as the general condition of the hardware. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
