From a propeller stand point, it really doesn’t give a Sh!t. It’s just absorbs the power an dampens harmonics. I personally like to run lower RPM an Higher MP. I feel like I’m taking advantage of the slower burning fuel an the fixed timing that way. More bang for your buck...:)

The H-1 Gov was Very popular on the Early Mooneys. PCU 5000 an McCauley 290D’s are a nice upgrade when the time comes.

I can’t say with any degree of certainty as to why they made the change, but I can tell you a square tip prop performs better than a rounded tip but with the added expense of increased noise. Also, using the -16E Blade May have been a move to Standardize the propellers even though the J has a Lycoming flange an the K’s have Continental flanges. That was something I never understood about McCauley. using the same blade for both 4 an 6 cylinder. You will never see that with a Hartzell.

That sounds like a lot of work for lack luster performing Lubricant. Aeroshell Grease isn’t exactly(any of them) aren’t that great for lubrications, but they do a fine job keeping moisture out of certain areas because of the Microgel an Clay. Aeroshell is the prolific Name in aviation line because there are only a hand full of competitors. Not a lot of companies want to do the testing an go through the approval processes to get their product approved for aviation use, an I can’t blame them. That being said ,cutting a lack luster grease with 100LL makes no sense to me, why not just get something that flows that fits your needs. Cause when the 100LL evaporates, it’s not AS22 anymore anyway. There are some great purpose formulated grease out there. Lucas makes some good stuff, there are some great Lithium greases out there as well. Couple yrs ago I had a Aeroshell Rep come to my shop to witness a tear down to inspection of a propeller that had 690hrs SNEW (King Air F90 Propeller) that had been serviced with #6. The propeller literally eat itself up from the inside. So the Rep takes samples of the grease(broken down grease aka Oil) out of the propeller back to Houston for testing. A month later we get the report that the grease met the Milspec. Come to find out the milspec that we all hold to a high standard was so broad that anything between the consistency of Bondo an water was in compliance. I feel like anything that Rotates at high speed where heat could build should have a superior type grease. An unfortunately haven’t seen a Aeroshell Offering that Meets that. Rant an Bitching Complete now.

Vibration wise the 3 blade prop on a K seems to play much better with the 6 cyl engine. Does help in climb, but after that I think it’s just sexy Ramp appeal. A K Model being utilized properly will spend its life in the Teens or low Flight Levels an a 3 blade prop isn’t worth piss there, unless it on a bigger higher HP engine. The folks in Kerrville understood what was needed propeller wise an installed the proper propeller for the intended applications mission. The C221 on the K’s is a great propeller. Personal option: Would have like to seen the narrow blade that’s used on the early Ovation or Eagles used with the 220hp 252’s. It would have used a little more runway getting off the grd, but that blade is much easier to twist than the wider chord blades that are in the C221 propeller in Cruise. But one can only dream. That’s why there are engineers that are on a completely different pay grade making those decisions.

If it’s a McCauley they will do that over time. they may leak just a little grease, an it never really turns into a giant grease leak to make you worry, that’s because there isn’t much grease in them to begin with. wanna keep an eyes on a grease filled prop, once you notice a slight leak it’s time to do something about it to keep the cost down

You should see all your limitations in your POH or Supplemental.

Good God!!! I salivate uncontrollably every time you do that!!!

If that’s Lead on the seat like my 520 had, a little Valve Grinding Compound, Drill, Fuel hose an Patient Mechanic can fix it Had a Cylinder that was 15/80 an spooling the Turbo up, to 72/80 an quiet exhaust pipe in a couple hours. Very satisfied, except for the pep talk about run it leaner. Which I do now an Borescope is showing less deposits in the Cylinders an the belly stays cleaner longer

Are left/right mags the same?

Or 1200 Series Bendix -
The Teflon is really look about holding oil/Grease back, you should have any issues in that union. Yes, the Etching process is pretty rough. Doesn’t take long to open up some clearances. Well normally you will get about 4 O/H out of a set of blades. Sometimes a 5th but not very often depending on blade design. Dont always have to O/H to make them look like new. An IRAN can give the same visual appeal, an not be nearly as rough to the propeller Components.
-
Oh Boy!! Guess I Need to pay closer attention. Sorry about that. Etching an Corrosion Rework is the #1 killer of McCauley Hub Blade Sockets. During the O/H process(Very rough on a propeller) the aluminum parts are Dipped in Nitric Acid. That Acid chews a layer of material off the part. With your propeller being etched 3 times that could be some of it. Another possibility is during those O/H if there was some Corrosion in the sockets, that has to be worked out which opens up the tolerance more. Then there is also the guy who falls asleep while working the corrosion or damage out with power tools....lol.. Kidding

.950hrs TT an Teflon Mod has to be done? So I will ask agin in a different way: So your 950Hr TT propeller with a Factory Recommenced TBO of 3000hrs has to have the Teflon Mod done at First disassembly. This means your Blade Sockets in the hub are worn completely out, in only 950hrs!!!... Unheard of! Perspective on this: I have(Personally) a C505 McCauley propeller that is Just like your propeller except it feathers an has bigger blades. It lived a long life on a Cessna 414 before it was transplanted to a Real plane!!............................... Yes, a Real plane...;) The blade to hub Union is the same as your propeller. Even uses the same blade Orings. My hub has been in service long enough to be on its second set of blades. As of two Yrs ago when it was pulled off to Check out an reseal cause I had just purchased the Plane it had a total of 6100hrs TT on the Hub. Not looking at any logbooks I’m gonna venture a pretty responsible Guess that it has about 6400hrs TT on the hub now. Guess who doesn’t have the Teflon Mod Yet!! This guy.

New Oring an Gasket Kit would fix you up for another 22 years. That leak may get worse, but at some point it will get better then stop all together. At that point it gets expensive because there is no grease left in the propeller an steel parts will start consuming each other. Charging 5 AMU to O/H propeller is Bent Over the wing abuse!! Thats 2 AMU to High

A reason to avoid dynamic propeller balancing?
Cody Stallings replied to Pasturepilot's topic in General Mooney Talk
Anything that Spins needs to be balanced. Human body can’t feel certain vibrations, but your Crankshaft an everything aft can. 3 issues with Dynamic Balance. 1) Old Timers don’t wanna hear About it, it wasn’t available back in their day an everything worked fine. 2) Viewed as a Gimmick, sorta like MMO Conversation. People think if they don’t feel a very pronounced difference in Vibration, then they were Had!! 3) An in my opinion only. A balance Machine in the hands of an Individual that isn’t properly trained, an equipment isn’t kept Calibrated is Dangerous. A balance gone wrong can be detrimental to a Crankshaft, Dampeners, Avionics an the overall well being of the Rotating assembly. Not trying to throw stones at anyone at all If you have the Ability to have your propeller balanced by a tech that is trained an uses equipment that’s not covered with dust, do it. You won’t be disappointed.- 54 replies

Yes Sir, That’s Robbery. A near by FBO at MEM will tell you the price is the same weather it’s a Lear 45 or a Portable. Thats never made any sense to me. I went the 280cf or 330cf x2 an never looked back, In my opinion it’s the only way to go. Also, I have found when one has copious amounts of O2 in their hanger, they tend to use it more regularly(Not so worried about the gouging at the next Re-Fill). That equates to having a more refreshed feeling after the flight, operating in Cooler Smoother thinner air is also an added perk.

Next step for trace amount of something (grease?) on prop
Cody Stallings replied to DXB's topic in General Mooney Talk
That’s a great question. Would think the filter would would have caught an dirt and/or Lead. If there was in fact a continuous oil flow to the props, wonder why the Engine oil isn’t tainted Grey? As I said above, Your Hands can answer this question. -
Next step for trace amount of something (grease?) on prop
Cody Stallings replied to DXB's topic in General Mooney Talk
There is Zero Heat being pumped into the propeller hub via oil. There is no flow of oil to speak of at the propeller. Just oil moving back an forth between the Governor an the propeller. When you remove a CS prop in most cases you will notice a grey sludge in the Crankshaft an in the Bore of the hub. That’s centrifuged oil that been there for yrs. Other wise the oil would be the same color as what’s on your dipstick. can also try this: You can pull your spinner off after a flight an put your hand on the cylinder of the propeller, then put your other hand on the case halves or even the oil cooler. At that point you will see what I mean. -
