Straighten me out here. Are you asking if the B2D is supposed to be on the plane? Or only the 2D supposed to be on there? The C53 is a very Vintage Propeller, only younger than the C14 it Superseded. Yes it is a very good Propeller, that is slowly dying. The blades are like finding Hens Teeth when one goes under. As far as AD’s go!!! It has the only one the matters, Red-Oil. Also, that Propeller should only Attach to the flange one way. If you have two short drive pins on the crankshaft, then you can flip it 180 degrees, But it’s still the same orientation. was your tech that’s no longer available Randy Barnett by chance? -

I don’t think Cycling the Propeller is going to do much for you. Its Most likely the Aeroshell #6 behind the blade Orings. When it breaks down to oil, it streaks past the Orings. Might you chasing the #6 out with #5. It’s a much better an thicker grease -
Yes Sir!! 3M sells it. It’s EC-776 an it is a must for all Mooney owners. Its a Bit pricey, but worth it

Here is a Constant Speed, Full Feathering, Counterweighted McCauley 500 Series bolted to the front of a Single engine Piston Pounder. It Fails to Feather in the event of an Oil pressure issues. This Propeller uses Oil pressure to push the prop off the start lock (Latch) towards Low pitch(Fine). There is no High pitch(Course) stop in this Propeller. It finds its own High pitch between +14.5 degrees an +87.5 degrees. Another Fun Fact(Or not so Fun Fact) about this Propeller, It will not Fixed Pitch in a High power decent when you reach Vne, like a Straight Constant-Speed Propeller will, because it has so large of a pitch range at its disposal it will just keep gathering pitch to prevent an Overspeed. A Feathering Propeller always stands out in the crowd with its very Tall Cylinder. It has to be really tall to facilitate such a large Pitch range. Most CS props move 15-30 degrees. Feathering Props move 70-80 Degrees. Requires much more Travel. Also Coyote, Not all Feathering Twin Props have Counterweights on the blades. Twin Comanche an Aztec are two that come to mind that don’t. But most do. -

Well, I guess I come from a different time/type of Customer service. 120Hrs SMOH an I’m sure that O/H was in the $40/50K Range. Why are we pulling this engine off? It’s not because you want too! Why is it your financial responsibility? In my option, It’s not. FAA Form 8120-11 being brought up in the next conversation may help you out. I would bet if someone were to send the cotter pins out of your screen to a metallurgy along with the cotter pin that the O/H manual calls for, there would be a difference in the two. An that’s where SUPS come from!!! Lets be honest, calendar time(out of warranty) is not what caused that. The 120hrs on the engine didn’t cause that. That issue was put in place long before you ever had your engine reinstalled. It’s from trying to save money during the O/H process. Clearly none of this should be out of your pocket with Con recommendation of don’t start it. They need to seen a couple guys to your place, remove the engine, fix it an reinstall with a giant thank you to you for your understanding an sorry for the inconvenience. I have had to do it in the Propeller world if one springs a leak or something of that nature. It’s called customer service.- 64 replies

Looks pretty good to me, however your running it pretty easy on power. as you put a little more MP in the equation your temps may come up a little, however you have plenty of “Safe” operation range available it looks like.

Cracks in most all cases need a right angel to propagate from. I would say a scratch or the propriety coating(if it has any) starting to come off of the valve. I would wanna look at the other side of that valve just to verify, cause the side we are seeing will have a compression layer on it, the other side will be the stressed side. Pull it out an have it Mag Checked(Magnafluxed). -
I’m not gonna be much help on this one. However I will say, I haven’t seen any documentation that states that a Composite Prop strike is any less of an event than with Aluminum blades.

Your Fine. The K Flange is what the plane was approved with years ago. The R flange(C2YR) is just the newer version. The -1B(F) an (F)7666A-2 just means the propeller has large knob blades. Strengthen pitch change Mechanism. Yet another very desirable update. The -2 means two inch diameter reduction from the Blade Design of 76 inches. That -2 puts you at 74 inches to comply with the TCDS. Also, the B in the hub design dose not mean it’s a B hub. The B has to be in the Serial Number(CH1234B) -

Propeller pitch range - specific to the airplane?

It’s sensitive to the Engine an plane. That Propeller on a J has a Different Low pitch, but the same High pitch(I have no clue why, no engineering blood in me). What I have learned over the years with the Low pitch of a propeller, it’s a very Critical angle to setup properly. We will say your 200hp engine at 2700rpms +14.0 degrees is all that engine will twist. Meaning it slowly gains RPM above 2700rpm on the roll. That’s what you want, cause it’s basically a seamless transition to the Governor taking full control of the Propeller. No surging as the Gov senses the upcoming Overspeed an smoothly adjusts blade angle to hold RPM. NOW!!! Same Prop/Blade, Same 200HP But with +13.0 of Low pitch, or even +13.5 of Low pitch, when the power is advanced the propeller will meet an exceed the 2700rpm causing the Governor to get “surprised” with rapidly building RPM, so it sends a large amount of oil to the prop cylinder which it most cases pulls the propeller down 50 or so RPMs, then the Governor will release causing the surging you hear on takeoff of sometimes. On to the High Pitch. Anthony is sorta on the right track(till he derails..lol). The High is configured around where the plane is going to Operate Altitude wise, an the Vne of the aircraft in a power on decent. In Most cases in optimal conditions most CS piston Propellers will hit the high pitch stop in a nose down attitude power on 10-15knts from the Vne, at that point the propeller will “ go fixed pitch” an the Governor is no longer capable of controlling RPM, an you will see a rise that is only controllable with aircraft pitch. Take Bryan’s build sheet for his C221 McCauley, it’s shows +38.0 of High Pitch so At 15k Ft he’s cruising somewhere in the area of +25 to +30 degrees @ 65% 70% power. The other 8 degrees is for when the nose gets pushed over with that power setting an ATC asks for “No-delay thru 10K” an you dial in 1000--1200fpm so you have a buffer of blade angle to utilize to keep off the high stop. Now to the M20S an it’s Original Prop an Blade angle. The McCauley “toothpick” 2 blade that graced the nose of the S an some of the R’s was an engineering disaster. Trying to Derate the engine via RPM an hooking a small Propeller to it , you have to turn up the Low Pitch in order to even get it to move. Once it got off the grd an in cruise on step it was fast as hell. It could pull a more aggressive blade angle while corkscrewing through the air. But the HP increase an 3 blade turned them into a well rounded machine. -
