  1. Have done both, but won't take off if I know either is not operational. Taking off with lights non-functional sounds like a future NTSB report. FWIW, I am more comfortable with no landing light over no runway lights. As long as you have taxi way lights it is not that bad, but no lights at all at the airport, I would divert to another airport. (Down here we have one every 5-10 miles or so)
  2. Lets see, I have had drips from leaking mag seals, push rod seals, oil returns on the bottom of engine and even a couple from loose or missing case bolts. The best way to determine the source is to remove cowls, clean engine, add dye, run and look for leaks. It is pretty difficult to find a leak by just looking because the oil gets blown all over the place.
  3. My Jeppesen Skybound adapter just stopped working. Tried mutliple computers and mutliple cards. Anyone know where I can get a new/used adapter? I can't find one on the usual sites. Ebay, craigslist, barnstormers, etc. Alternatively, I need to find someone who has an adapter that would be willing to let me either send cards or borrow. craig
  4. +1 on the twins, especially if it is warm.... Also, Academy usually has good prices on cheap, (but not total junk) tents.
  5. I have heard this mentioned several times over the years. While, it might be effective in washing out some sludge, I would question the wisdom of pouring avgas into a warm/hot engine. Seems to me a good way to encounter a vapor cloud fire. Avgas works good as a cleaning solvent, but mechanics don't use it because of the flammability hazard.
  6. Check flightradar24.com.
  7. +1 on Byron. He really knows the mechanical aspects of Mooneys as well.
  8. Where in Houston are you located?
  9. I have an E which is the same sized cabin.....
  10. I have traveled TX = SoDak and back several times. I just completed our second trip to FL All VFR. Having said that, the IR does add some flexibility to the trip. But, definitely not required.
  11. 12-14 hrs in a day! wow. The longest I have done is 8 hrs flight time. But that was TX to North Dakota, and Houston to Key West, You will likely run out of the US before you get to 10 hrs.
  12. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/stpages/mooneyM20standardreplacementparts.php?clickkey=13908 looks like Chrome are 300, If you fly often I would go with the standard for less than 1/2 the price.0 The rapco's are even cheaper. I bought them last year. will let you know how they run.
  13. congrats. I just finished mine last summer. It really increases the utility of the plane. Keep your skills up and it will serve you well.
  14. thanks for working this out! ordered mine today.
  15. I chased leaking bolts for about 5 years before I just decided the engine was 30 years old, at TBO, and needed a reseal. I had some success with sealing the top bolts using the remove, clean surface, apply sealant, replace bolts and re-torque. I never had much success with the bottom bolts. They leaked until I replaced the engine. No more leaks, but quite a pricey fix. As to quantity, +1 on the "a little oil goes a loooong ways". I had oil dripping onto the nosewheel all the time, but no noticeable increase in usage. (maybe 1/2 qt between changes).
  16. I have both Halos and CA's (non TSO) for several years now. Here is my $0.02 CA has better mikes and imho better ear pieces. Halo appears to be a little more durable and costs less $$
  17. Two ways around this problem.... either carry the earbuds in a plastic bag in your pocket, or move to a warmer location...
  18. ok, everyone.... since factory tours are resolved, go buy a new Mooney! (I would, but I just put a new engine in my old one)
  19. You will see the temperatures come down quite dramatically when the rings seat.... This would allow you to back down the fuel flow required a bit, but I was told to keep running it hard for the first 10 hrs or so..
  20. On my E, I was running 75-80% power and adding fuel to keep the CHT's in check. I was told to run it hard, so at first it was indicating 16 or so gph and after a few hours, I backed it down to 75%+ power and was running about 13-14 gph. I didn't spend a lot of time looking at the fuel flow. Just the CHT and EGT's I am sure there are more experienced folks on the list, so YMMV.
  21. I have 4 kiddos of my own, so I understand the part of never affording a plane to fly everyone, We usually have one or two who have time constraints or other commitments, so they fly commercial, The rest of us wait for them to arrive when we get to the destination. For 65-70k, you can get either a pretty run out J or a really nice C,E,F,G and even have some left over to cover new owner surprises. Any of these will very nicely cover the mission.
  22. Good job on flying the plane. It can be repaired/replaced.
  23. I have had it 9 yrs, previous owner 30 yrs, The one before him bought it new in 1964.
