Seriously approaching buying a new plane
McMooney replied to mkerian10's topic in General Mooney Talk
M, my opinion as a newish owner, 6 years now. ownership is NOT easy, but it is rewarding. If you know you won't be satisfied with anything but ownership, buy asap,, don't wait 20 years like myself. purchase price: argue, beg, pick, haggle etc... till you at-least don't feel you took it in the rear, maintained, good chance you get this back. As has been stated, buy as much as you can possibly afford. A plane without avionics is better than not having a plane but it's far cheaper and less stressful to just buy and fly. It is almost a truism, ownership cost will eventually DWARF your purchase price. real numbers: i pay 12au/yr before rolling it out of the hanger. that's hangar, insurance, annuals, some dbs etc..., Currently waiting/stressing for my second round of avionics to be installed. Total avionics in 6 years is about 30au, random maintenance/upgrades another 10 to 15 au. next, extended range tanks, then new autopilot, then paint, etdc..... see where i'm going? hopefully I make a large profit on over my original purchase price, but it'll only be a dent in total ownership cost. For your sanity, never add up these cost and just accept it isn't a reasonable thing. so now what you own it, you have to fly it. sounds fun and it is, but,,,,, as you are really more a steward than an owner, you have to go fly it even when you'd rather be doing other things. I believe the worse thing you can do for your bird is to let her sit. ever notice how flight school planes last forever? don't be paranoid it shouldn't fall apart from sitting two weeks but more is better. honestly, this is your second girlfriend. Maintenance, DO, find someone you trust and preferably, base your plane on the same field. Really, due to the rules, they'll most likely see your girl more often than you. learn how to do the simple stuff, oil changes, tires, brakes, plugs, batteries, lights etc... 1 it saves you money 2 it saves on downtime 3 why actually own it if you aren't willing to get a little dirty. don't be scared, they are really simple machines. oh yeah, airplane hardware is unique to airplanes, limit shopping at autozone. study up on fbo's and their pricing, some places can surprise you. other than that gumpfs, Gumpfs, GUMPFS at ever possible point in the pattern and you should be fine. forgot, when looking make sure you have the plane checked for corrosion, first and foremost. this will kill the plane. Engines, skins, (hopefully)gear etc... can be replaced but corrision somewhere it shouldn't be will put her down for good. -
all the devices i still use are usb-c. samsung phone, ipad, galaxy tab, hp laptop, usb drives, power bricks, blah blah blah. have adapters for an older ipad and the darn action cam. would be nice to have native ports but for the price can't beat cigarette lighter adapters. pretty sure i can buy 20 or 30 adapters for the price of a mid con or garmin built in

Dual electronic ignition upgrade on a J?
McMooney replied to Kirch56H's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Love my surefly, one of the best airplane purchases i've made. Lost the field wire on the alternator once, thing didnt skip a beat even at 8 to 9 volts. I would install a second with a backup battery, if they let me. -
I"m sad, TKM has gone out of business, per the website. I was really hoping they'd make an 8.33 slide in replacement for my mx170b

Are pilots going to be replaced by AI?
McMooney replied to ilovecornfields's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Note, nasa already has an AI pilotless plane. also believe nextgen fighters are pilot optional AI driven -
Are pilots going to be replaced by AI?
McMooney replied to ilovecornfields's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Is this really a question???? autopilots already fly 75%+ of passenger flights. AutoLand ??. Yes, computers will one day fly airliners. How soon that is? -
I was going but birdy is still in the shop getting G5 jewelery 8(
-
hmmm, if i could afford the acclaim 50k might be worth it 8).
-
Honestly, i just paid for an annual, better out $3k then $$$$$ the heck with a prebuy. biggest instruction was to inspect for corrosion as that's the one thing that money may not be able tfix.

AD 2023-02-04 NA Sign off cost.
McMooney replied to vorlon1's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
called shop had check done while i was on the phone. all of 5 mins -
So i got a chance to play with the g5's before installation. I was completely impressed that out of the box without external connections except for the battery, it functions as a fully capable AI. playing with it while walking around surveying, it didn't seem to drift any. pretty sure a mechanical AI after being jostled and turned upside down a few dozen times, would've broken.
-
are they all not like this ?
-
if mechanically sound, i'd list it at least 115 to 120k, if not higher. let the market tell you differently.

this reminds me, anyone know the magic to get the visors to stay up? mine come loose 5 mins after i tighten them

Would like to ditch my vacuum system
McMooney replied to M20 Ogler's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
G5's are being installed in my bird as we speak which leaves the brittain as the only thing using the vac/stand by vac systems. my step somehow fell off the plane a few years back. -
mine follows pink and green lines, has a knob to follow magnetic heading but not the DG, i guess they align if i sync the dg to my compass 8) wish it had altitude hold. I'd really be interested if i could find the bi-818 to make it follow the dg. even has an approach mode that actually works. but if i had to install something today, i'd probably pay duncan and go trutrak for 8 to 10k

To be clear, the pma8000g is an AMAZING audio panel, i'm just saying as a hobbyist, i don't get enough use out of it
-
I decided to go with 2 G5's instead of the gi-275's, they have a cleaner upgrade path to the gfc500 and g3x also i could get them and have them installed immediately instead of waiting months. most of your panel, well except for hte ADF i'd keep, dme isn't necc but if it works why bother removing it. as for the kx165 a navcom is a navcom, what's the point of upgrading? worry about it if/when it breaks. also to save some money i'd think about sliding in a psengineering instead of the 350c, my audio panel upgraade from a kma20 to a pma8000g was EXPENSIVE. don't think i'd do it again. really like the new audio panel but after owning it, i think i could've spent money other places first.

Crossing the Atlantic (Now Flying)
McMooney replied to Tyler G's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I'm planning for the same trip in my m20e, hoping to get the long range tanks installed next year. good autopilot the year after.
