  1. Hank, I may be missing something, but I don't think the AS is calibratd during the IFR certification. Maybe one of the technical guys can chime in? Altimeter and transponder only, according to my log entry
  2. So what happens afterwards? Do you call the insurance company and they take care of it? Who do you call to get it out? You can't fly it out and the land owner probably wants it removed asap.
  3. That was the Melbourne,Florida accident, similar in that the tower was focus on getting the plane to a particular runway and ended up talking a lot and changing runways which distracted the controller and when he realized there was conflict he commanded the cirrus to turn tight to avoid the traffic which was still quite a ways away. Search in YouTube fir "accident case study communication breakdown "
  4. I didn't say it was his fault, but it did happen while he was talking, I know personally that I have a hard time concentrating and trying to listen to a long convoluted speech, just saying it might have been better to keep instructions simple till she has leveled out. And I don't think it help telling her to keep the turns tight, but she is the PIC, so ultimately it's her fault. In retrospect they should have vector her back out for another approach to 4, she seem comfortable with that, it was the controller who called for the go around on the first approach to 4. We can all learn from this, pilots and controllers included.
  5. My only criticism of the controller was the last long winded verbage of what he was going to, probably only added to the load overload of the pilot.
  6. There is already a thread in Miscellaneous forum.
  7. I heard new engines run hot, did you break it in? Maybe cylinder 1 is just not broken in properly.
  8. It's tough to learn a language in school, you need to be immersed by having those around you speaking the language, those in multilingual environment have an advantage
  9. Isn't Marvel Mystery oil suppose help with dirty valves, etc?
  10. So you tried listening to the VORs and that works? I got think that the antenna is somehow electrically connected to the fuselage but you seem to verify it, the use of handheld eliminates every thing but the antenna? I'd imagine that you don't have to tap, just touching the fuselage lightly causes the problem, yes? Wish I could help...
  11. Shortest list: Still be an active pilot when I'm 90...everything else pales in comparison
  12. Why don't you ask "So what are the benefits of GPS?" A one off event should not be used to judge the benefits of either. I've had ILS approaches down, should we eliminate ILS too?
  13. Since I've gotten ADSB in, I've used the traffic ability a few times to avoid close calls, for busy airspaces its a must have, IMHO.
  14. I close mine, after engine is properly leaned.
  15. High time engine you have less invested, if PO abused it and it doesn't make it to TBO, say 1800, you have lost less than if a engine with 400 hours requires an overhaul.
  16. I thought we all have 1/2, 7/16 were on the smaller 235, at least according to SI 1037M
  17. I'm 1800+, another question is has anybody run them past TBO?
  18. The southwest has the best weather and the lowest routes across the mountains. At least until the monsoon season. Either way I would plan on flying in the early morning and try to be on the ground by noon for multitude of reasons.
  19. I think they mean shoulder belts and they don't have to be that tight to prevent abrupt movements.
  20. Can't you just open it up with Gimp, Photoshop or equivalent and just save it in a higher resolution?
  21. Why not move the batteries further aft imstead? Maybe more expensive to add a door?
  22. IBM has never been close to bankruptcy, they lost the PC business because it was open...Garmin knows this.
  23. 77 Vge is 120 vs 150 for 78 onwards
  24. Hawaii seems to be the hardest of states to fly to, at least in a Mooney
  25. And probably the heavier models require more frequent replacement.
