Hi everyone, I was wondering if the mechanic cowl flaps on my 1980 M20J (24-0975) can be upgraded with an electric option ? Here is what I found on the M20J illustrated parts catalog: 880050-509 COWL FLAP MOTOR AVAILABLE FOR 14V AIRCRAFT WITH FIELD MODIFICATION TO ELECTRIC COWL FLAPS; EFFECTIVE: 24-0001 THRU 24-TBA. Curiously when I am looking at the Mooney Retrofit Kits page, the part number 880050-509 does not appear in the list !!! Has somebody an experience with this modification ? Thanks for your help. Philippe

I have a very early 201 (serial 24-0048) with manual cowl flaps. The cowl flaps are either open or closed. I have tried to push them half way closed but the handle either snaps shut or is all the way open. Is this the way they are supposed to operate? I know later versions had the motor with a variety of positions. Thanks Mark Jackson

Does anybody know the proper trailing opening for cowl flaps,on a 1978 m20j. IN THE SUMMERTIME,FOR BETTER OIL TEMP,IN CRUSE.....

I took my 231 up for the first time since our local mechanic replaced 3 pushrod seals in the engine. Everything was great until I went to push the cowl flaps closed. To my surprise they popped right back out to the trail position. Anyone have ideas on what the problem could be?

I just put an overhauled engine in N201TK. I have been running at high power for the first few hours to break the cylinders in. At 4500, 25 squared, 100 ROP I have had a very hard time keeping the oil temps in the green. Two flights ago I had to open the cowl flaps keep it in the green. Pressure and CHT are normal albeit a little high since the engine is running hard. We fixed up the baffling and adjusted the cowl flaps to trail 1/4 inch in cruise, after which the temps stayed green but at the high end (like 215-225). New cooler, new vernatherm, fresh overhauled engine. Is there anything obvious to check that would help bring the temps down? This isn't going to work in South Texas in the summer when it's 110 on the ground. Also, my cowl flaps only have the open or close position. Open at cruise makes everything in the plane shake. I can trail them by holding the handle open an inch but it is hard as heck. This is a 1977 201 (24-0048) so an early model. Is it possible to trail them manually? Mark Jackson
