  1. Have a sportys handheld that i found in a box after 9years. Turned it on and the batteries were still able to transmit and receive!! The AA’s didn’t even leak. I was shocked! Now the two icoms I have go dead if you just look at them. -Matt
  2. Avionics shops can be weird like that. I’ve worked with a few that have done the same thing. Worst is GNS 430/530 software updates. Go in for a simple squawk and the bill doubles because the tech thought it’d be a good idea to update to the latest software. Stop. Or explorative troubleshooting, swapping parts then getting billed twice. Once for the original swap and again for a new audio panel that doesn’t fix the problem. Finally, “we’ll mail you the paperwork”, 1.2 years later and they still can’t produce a log book entry. But they hold the keys, because Garmin says so. I’d still make friends with the shop and take the high road. Scoff, -Matt
  3. Hi Martin. I’d venture to guess 70% of the Vintage GA aircraft have that amount of corrosion. At least from the looks of it, the spar caps look ok. Wish Mooney would have primed the entire airframe. Good time to use corrosion X or acf50. You could clean it up, but the entire airplane probably is like that. -Matt

  5. If I was even close to the thought of spending money on an exchanged core or new IO390, I would get a quote from Ken Tunnel at Lycon. Tell him what you want. I’m sure he can convert it to a dual mag. I would have him overhaul it. .010 Over on the cylinders. DCL lifters, new dowled case (if it’s not already), machined case for their o-ring. I have had great luck with the 4 or 5 of my overhauls I have sent him. -Matt

  7. It’s only worth what someone will pay you. Why pay for an appraisal yourself? Home owners don’t appraise their own homes, they have the buyers lender appraise. -Matt
  8. If a 3/4 wrench fits on the lead it’s a REM type plug. If it’s a 7/8“ it’s and RHB plug. However, It does look like you have 3/4” REM type plugs. Tempest and Champion have slightly different Part numbers respectively. -Matt
  9. REM37BY in the tempest or champion variety work really great! They don’t last as long as the fine wires but burn clean and are cheap. double check your spark plug lead size prior to ordering. I had all BY plugs in my engine for awhile. Switched to all fine wire to see what the rage was about. Bottom plugs started to fowl. Switched bottom plugs back to BY plugs. Problem solved. -Matt

  11. Xplane 11 is great. Flying needle skills watching airspeed and altitude are the same as in the aircraft. Developing a scan is what’s important. The keystrokes on the FMS/GPS in real life will be easier. Some of the ad on panels and aircraft don work as well as the stock aircraft. I think I just need some technical help to make FMS match the real thing. Ie the 737 FMS and the citation FMS are the same in the sim. But flying and needle watching are identical. Dial the turbulence up off the stop, throw some wind, fly at night. You almost don’t notice It’s a sim. -Matt
  12. Limiting the MP would keep the turbo RPM down. I’ve played with TSIO 550s a bit. Turbo RPM was always a concern in the flight levels operating over 40”. They hold together at much higher MP at lower levels. Maybe that’s why lycoming has the MP limitation. That Bravo engine is such a great engine. -Matt
  13. Wagaero sells a kit for the S53 valve. I just replaced mine. They come with 2 orings and the new c clip. When I disassembled mine I found the clip was not installed properly internally from safe-air. :-0 I just bought a few extra kits to have on hand. -Matt
  14. I have a good friend that details Cars and aircraft. He has his C.O.P.s for most SoCal airports and insurance. There is also a wash rack at SMO. We spent 4-5hrs together on a Sunday a few weeks ago and really did wonders on the airplane. -Matt
  15. Yes, Mark was the one that pointed me in the correct direction too. New Lycoming's have a 115psi redline. I wouldn’t be concerned unless the oil was cold on a takeoff run. -Matt

  20. Hi Paul, do you see the FP flicker or drop prior? Had an aux tank in a Pitts, you could see FP fluctuate prior to sucking air. -Matt
  21. I used to work at GEU. I put a laser thermometer on my wrench in the hangar once. 115° in the shade on a north facing hangar. Ambient was 118°. -Matt

  23. Similar issue with my 530w. I primarily use my 155 if I want to talk with someone. I can receive fine on the 530 clearly but transmitting produces a really strange side tone after the mic is depressed over 3 seconds. Interested in your findings! I have swapped antennas and coax cables with no improvement. -Matt
  24. The intake flanges are often overtorqued, don’t align correctly, or can be bent. I have had good luck filing the ears of the retainer flush. Also, many times the flange doesn’t seat into the grove and is not flush. As a last resort use RTV to hold the gasket in place. Try and use something that doesn’t dry like halomar etc. The lock washers tend to work loose as well, or maybe the gasket just compresses enough and things get loose over time. I’ve used double gaskets in the past but it was for a fire-breathing 390hp EXP540. -Matt
