  1. Sorry for the continued thread drift:) this why I try to read all topics on MS even if they don’t interest me because sometime some great discussion are with in them. I will make this short. We agree 99% with each other with exception that a 231(Turbo) would have had a better outcome. I will agree to disagree on this. When I read an accident report with the high mountain terrain, wings starting to ice(IMC), thin air that also affects the wings, severe mountain wave, all seats filled in the seats and probably baggage for all the passengers plus mom that went home commercial. I personally don’t think that turbo would have had a different outcome. My point is that a pilot like this would have been even more confident or over confident with a turbo and I believe have the same outcome. BTW-sorry I missed you all at Catalina!
  2. On my last trip I found this to be very accurate to help me flight plan a clear route. It was also accurate when I went through a not so clear route. https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/land/hms.html
  3. Sorry but overconfidence in a turbo will get you in just as much trouble. A 231 would not have had a better outcome for this pilot, even if it had ice protection. I have flown that area many times over the years and he could have not made a worse decision to take off that day and certainly pick the worse place to cross over IFR in any single engine piston plane in that weather. For that matter IFR in any mountain area out west is crazy. Like I mentioned earlier even if I had FIKI most the time I would need it I would opt not to fly! They crashed only a few miles from where I Elk hunt often.
  4. We saw this one on a leg stretch stop in Ukiah a couple weeks ago. Looks like it had a fun and interesting history. Hit 430+ mph! https://www.mustangsmustangs.com/p-51/survivors/serial/44-73129
  5. Omar, awesome plane! Mike you are the Hugh Hefner equivalent in the Mooney world! Always surrounded by the hottest planes:) I want to go to one of your hangar parties and see what shows up in the grotto!!
  6. If you have the ability to fly SWA’s at the last minute and the ability to leave the plane in a hangar/tie down at either end then a J will be the most economical of the 2 choices. In my opinion there is not a FIKI plane with your purchase budget that won’t bite you in the ass in the months after you buy it. Since you are familiar with San Diego, I’m based at KMYF and I have been commuting to the imperial valley by plane for over 15 years. Flights will be scrub 99% of the time because of ice. That said it really has varied from year to year how bad the ice is. I can go 2 or 3 years with very few no go flights but then you will have a bad year when it seems like you can never fly. Most of the time that I can’t fly because of ice I wouldn’t want to fly even if I had a FIKI equipped plane. My recommendation is buy and maintain the best plane you can in your budget even if it means dropping down model. It will make ownership much more enjoyable. BTW I flew my J and fly my S in the mid to high teens more often than Most turbo owners do and the non turbos do just fine. Over a 400 mile trip the difference in trip time is small for planes in the equivalent budget range.
  7. I’m out. Didn’t get everything wrapped up today. Hopefully we can get another one set up soon. Have fun to all that can make it!
  8. I’m still a maybe. Finishing the install of my SureFly ignition today. Whether I make it will depend on getting it signed off today and a successful test flight.
  9. I thought you were swimming across?
  10. I flew through some bad smoke this past Tuesday here in San Diego. Many times I get an IFR to VFR on top clearance to get through the marine layer, this time I was glad I filed a complete flight plan. It surprised me how much smoke was above the layer and progressively got worse until I had no reference at all. The week before we flew up to the San Juan Islands in Washington. To be sure we didn’t get into the smoke I flew the coast all the way up which added an hour to the flight. Marine layer over the water and smoke over the land all the way up in california. Didn’t get to see any of the awesome coast line. We could have probably gone over land and got above the smoke easy enough but had the baby on board so tried to stay at a lower altitude for the long flight. TFR’s and tall mountains on the direct route.
  11. With the kids in school, sports etc it seems like someone has to be left behind or come late anyways. I fly solo 95% of the time since I use my plane to commute to work. I don’t want the cost of the fuel burn for anything bigger and I don’t need a bigger plane for myself. I have decided to send a few of the family commercial If needed and so far I usually end up flying 2 trips for the short ones since the schedules are staggered anyway.
  12. 84 dB backseat, 86 dB front seat, 90 dB in foot well next to fire wall.
  13. With just one kid pulling out the front seat is the best and safest thing to do. It makes getting in and out really easy with lots of area for legs, bags and changing. I actually end up leaving it out most time. A mid body or long body would be the most comfortable. With a C and taking out the front seat you can put you travel stroller and pack & play up front and partially into the foot well just short of the rudder pedals. The front seat in my Eagle is 25 lbs and the back is 12.5 lbs so if removed you pick up more UL. Funny how a kid so small requires 4x the baggage as an adult! We just flew up to Friday harbor in the San Juan Islands of Washington to see the orcas. Since all of California was on fire we flew all the way up the coast to avoid smoke. A lot of over water flying so in addition to baby stuff I had a raft and vest along. Before anyone gives me crap about the kid not having a headset on it is not that loud in my plane! He pulls it off when he’s moving around and we take our off to give our heads a rest all the time our selves. It less noisy than my Jeep on the freeway in the cabin! My son loves to go in the plane!
  14. What a bummer! Sounds/looks like everything would have been okay with the Plane.
  15. I flew that exact route a week ago and was thinking to myself about how I hope I don’t have a mag failure or worse. That is some beautiful rugged terrain. I have had 3 Mag failures and each time I failed to isolate and fly on the good mag. Now it will be the first thing I do on a rough running engine. EGT’s and CHT go crazy and can potentially cause a cylinder to go. Needless to say my plane ran perfectly on that flight but the thought of potential mag failure Occurred to me so I ordered a Surefly electronic ignition when I got to Jackson, when.
  16. It’s like getting a second opinion from the same doctor that did the procedure in the first place, doesn’t make sense. Texas is full of Mooney knowledgeable people. You always want a second set of eyes to look over the plane. You can certainly call Don and get his opinion of the plane that he has been maintaining.
  17. I believe the individually adjustable seat that can be removed easily started in 1982.
  18. Ovation 2 - ovation 3 - ovation ultra. All non turbo Aclaim - Aclaim type S - Aclaim Ultra. All turbo 2nd door and cleaner airframe on the Ultra models.
  19. Great thread comparing the 2. Gets good around page 17 with the timing, spark plug gap and performance of the 2 but it’s all worth a read. https://www.beechtalk.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=138654&start=240
