Tower not answering - what actually happened here?
kmyfm20s replied to DXB's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
Charging system is required on the IFR equipment list. Source of power is required for VFR night flight equipment list. Day time VFR a charging system or source of power is not needed but if your plane was manufactured after 1996 you need anti collisions lights, so I a source of power would be needed for those planes. -

Be careful some guy with a Prius with a lot of weird antennas will be at your door step with that kind of attitude;) -

Send in a NASA report -

I know you said you checked for exhaust leaks but I would take a harder look around the exhaust gasket and flange. This happened to me and it only takes a small steam of exhaust gases to hit the probe area to do this.

While I agree that impairment can be long lasting I don’t consider it to be a factor in this accident, just my opinion. That’s what the 5000+ hour ATP rated instructor was there for. The left seat party animal person didn’t matter.

I had an outer valve spring break and I couldn’t tell any difference in power. I only found it because in was getting aluminum specks in my oil filter and started looking for the source. I guess in this case having 3 pieces of the outer spring floating around it could have bound up with the inner spring preventing the valve from functioning properly. The only time I have had noticeably less power with the engine not sounding right was with a couple of magnetos failures. Unfortunately in this accident they were damaged in this crash. With the instructor in the plane I don’t feel like the trace amount of drugs in the student played any part in the crash, just my opinion.

Great idea! Put the section higher on the list, like 18K so they get those tailwinds they always talk about:)

Are you talking about the Missiles that go boom? Cool!

Because the photo not super clear it’s hard to tell if it’s erosion or deposit buildup to me. Compression check and listening for air escaping out of the exhaust pipe would help determine.

Your laptop will have a camera app built in for the built in camera. You will have to select the USB camera from the built in camera.

My technique, Preform on cool engine (lens can fog if engine is hot) remove top plug only ( I find if both plugs are out and it’s bright outside picture quality is hazy) position piston in the down position, bottom dead center clean lens and make sure it illuminated Insert camera and turn lens 180 degrees.

This is the one! I knew someone would have the info:)

Where do you find information to fly medical supplies?

Yes. I also just flew to Colorado and back yesterday. 3.3 hours there and 3.4 hours home all LOP before these pictures where taken today.

Bravo Exhaust Valve Failure - Root Cause
kmyfm20s replied to alextstone's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
You stimulated me to go take some picture and change my oil:) I also posted a link to the article I was referring to. -
@alextstone posted a thread showing his exhaust valve failure. I also attached an article from Mike Busch. In the article he says you should be able to identify a failure 100 to 200 hours before it happens. I didn't want to add all this to his but felt like others would like to see it. https://www.savvyaviation.com/wp-content/uploads/articles_eaa/EAA_2010-08_exhaust-valve-failures.pdf I scope at every oil change and while I'm there I do a compression check and rotate my spark plugs. I wanted to show how great bore scope photos come out doing it on your own. I went down and took these just this afternoon after reading his thread. These valves have 578 hours on them. I will look up the name of the camera but it has been mention here before. .

I flew to Colorado and back yesterday because I was tired of being cooped up but also because I wanted to pick up a rifle I had built. There was a lot fewer planes in the sky but nobody asked why or cared that I was flying. The FBO in Montrose was happy I was there and had 4 line guys help me park my plane. Usually they move it for the Jets but it was right in from when I was ready to leave. I can tell you that even though there is less traffic the controllers are just as busy if not more. Each controller is covering more frequency than they normally do. I'm going flying again tomorrow morning.

Yes, no problem at all. It is just a slow process extending the cable and pulling the plane in. I used it at my home hangar but the way it is situated it made it an extra long distance to pull it in. I ended up buying an Airtechniques RC tug which is awesome! I use a friend hangar in the mountain that has an incline and snow a lot. I installed the winch there and its perfect! I love that thing when I'm by my self or its slippery out pulls it right in!

Bravo Exhaust Valve Failure - Root Cause
kmyfm20s replied to alextstone's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I always thought it would neat if the engine monitor displayed the last 15 minutes or so on the monitor. Similar to an EKG tape. I think it would be very powerful tool while in the air. How often do you hear a sound, feel a vibration or see a change on the monitor and wished you didn’t have to wait to download. -
Bravo Exhaust Valve Failure - Root Cause

If you change your own oil it’s really easy to pull the top plug and look at the valves while your letting it drain. I think Mike Bush said you would be able to identify that bad valve 75 hours before that happens, can’t remember exact numbers. Basically if you check the bore scope every oil change it shouldn’t catch you by surprise. Also if you look at previous EGT readings on that cylinder you should see a rhythmic little peak of the temp which was an indication it was burning. You have motivated me to go change my oil today, thanks! -
I used to use a winch all the time. No problem at all!

Edit-didn’t see you mentioned the Drover which is great also! You are probably talking about Ross Steakhouse on 72nd street in Omaha. That place was great! It wasn’t the youngest crowd but that’s what gave it the classic dinning and band experience. Start off will a cocktail in the Bar, move on to a steak dinner, then the band would start playing in the lounge and people would go dance off their meal with an after dinner drink:) Another favorite was Jonny’s Italian steakhouse on 170th street, just good food and much more casual at the time I lived there.

I had the exact problem. I replaced the ignition switch, p-leads and then finally had an IRAN done on the magnetos that only 35 hours on them. The Kelly Aerospace (Junk) magnetos that I bought had a bad capacitor one causing the hot mag and the other had a bad bearing After only 35 hours. I have since read about plenty of bad experiences with Kelly Aerospace magnetos. Good luck!

No way would I get on a commercial airplane at this time.
