adrian Posted August 11, 2013 Author Report Posted August 11, 2013 Thanks everyone. Weather looks set at least for the first half of tomorrow's flight from Maine to Iqaluit. Most likely we'll then spend a few hours bumping through the clouds, wishing we had an autopilot!
Oscar Avalle Posted August 11, 2013 Report Posted August 11, 2013 Good luck! Let us know how it goes! Enjoy Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Awful_Charlie Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 Good luck Adrian - looking forward to hear about it when you get 'home' Do you have an estimate for Lyon yet
OR75 Posted August 12, 2013 Report Posted August 12, 2013 Dream trip but better half won't agree to it ( yet)
adrian Posted August 13, 2013 Author Report Posted August 13, 2013 Good luck Adrian - looking forward to hear about it when you get 'home' Do you have an estimate for Lyon yet Yes. Definitely in 2013! The weather between Greenland and Iceland is rubbish at the moment, and for the next few days it seems. It's also cloudy and snowing over the icecap. If I was flying a turboprop with boots, I might think about going - but it's no weather for a little Mooney. Fortunately there's no rush, and things will improve eventually.

Piloto Posted August 14, 2013 Report Posted August 14, 2013 Adrian I don't know how much fuel you have but it helps to have a lot. I have done this crossing eight times and always avoided Greenland but the planes had the fuel to make CYYR-BIRK non-stop. Greenland is expensive specially on holiday and weekends. Check rates here for Narsarsuaq http://iserit.greennet.gl/bgbw/ Reykjavic is my prefered airport in Iceland. The hotel is just across the street from the terminal (building behind in picture). They have a nice souvenir shop in the basement. Going via Santa Maria in the Azores (1400nm) is another option if you have the range and HF equipped. Santa Maria is nice and the people is super friendly. Gander Radio, New York Radio and Santa Maria Radio all have excellent HF coverage. Veery important that you check the winds before departure I use http://aviationweather.gov/iffdp/fdwndh They are pretty accurate. Good Luck José 2
chrisk Posted August 14, 2013 Report Posted August 14, 2013 José, did I looks up the fees and do the math properly. 100LL was about $16 per gallon? $442 additional fee for Sunday and Holidays?

You are right. The problem is that you don't know when is a holiday overthere. BTW they don't ask for your passport but your credit card.
DanM20C Posted August 14, 2013 Report Posted August 14, 2013 Thanks for keeping your blog, I'm looking forward to your adventure. Many of you know of this site already, but for those that don't. www.honeymooney.com Another E model owner not shy of long distance flights.
adrian Posted August 14, 2013 Author Report Posted August 14, 2013 José, I have 88 gallons of fuel - so plenty of range, with a normal LOP fuel flow of just under 9gph (or 6gph if I slow to 120kt). But I find 5 hours is a very long time to sit at the controls, and don't want to try Canada to Iceland direct. I fitted the long range tanks so that I would have more options for alternates, and also so that I can take full advantage of the occasional low fuel prices in some parts of Europe once I am home. Thanks for the links! Adrian.
