I have always been a north up kind of guy, especially when shooting approaches.

I do like how you can zoom out and see the planet and plan polar flights etc, cool to look at.

There is a new obstacles feature ... Not sure what use that is because the standard VFR chart also shows them, unless foreflight intends to use GPS altitude and issue warnings when too low close to some of these obstacles. Or if i were to hazard a guess, they are trying to develop a new module that reads altitude from your pitot static system and then display ground proximity warnings on the ipad :) (wild guess)

WingX has had obstacle warnings and a ground proximity warning system for 6 months. I'm a north up kind of guy, too, for what it's worth.

I ought to try wingx after my foreflight subscription ends in may. I am interested in the synthetic vision feature .. Nifty and cheap :)

It is tough to switch after you have learned one system or the other. The law of primacy applies, I think. Foreflight does seem to be playing catch up right now to WingX, but it would appear that they are closing the gap.

I haven't flown with either portable synthetic vision system yet, but by all accounts, Xavion's is far better than WingX's, and it is a one time fee of $100 rather than an annual subscription of $100. WingX requires a portable AHRS while Xavion just recommends one. My solution is to run WingX on an iPad loose in my lap to serve as an EFB, and to have Xavion running on a suction cup hard mounted and powered iPhone providing synthetic vision and emergency descent planning solutions. WingX is loaded on the iPhone too, just as a backup.

Clarke's Third Law applied to the VFR cockpit, from my perspective.

Yeah i have been looking for a backup. Up unil now, I did not know something called xavion exists :) thanks!

I flew with the new ForeFlight yesterday. The track-up features works as advertised. These were short, local trips to shoot some approaches, so I wasn't spending too much time on the maps page, but I played around with the new features and they seem to work fine.

FWIW, I also have never had a problem with North up in ForeFlight. To me, it's a bit more intuitive, because I use it essentially as a map substitute and I have a full panel with GNS480 an MX20 moving maps that satisfy my track-up needs. I think if you are using ForeFlight (or any iPad app) in a docked situation to take the place of a panel moving map, track-up probably makes more sense.

I think the track up feature may not work for older iPads. They are like Cessnas..... Too sloooowwwwww to handle the extra calculations.

I still use an iPad 1 and it handled the update well. Track up and the terrain features are great! Does the WingX app flight plan and file for you? Because that's why I chose ForeFlight years ago. All in one app! But I'm still a fan of the split screen WingX capability. And way better ADS-B receivers.

I am a track up guy, but the raster charts that Foreflight uses also display the words and the other info upside down as well. The Aera has vector charts and can rotate the words etc as the map moves under you.

I sent Hilton Goldstein an email... He's a fine guy, but it looks like he may be too busy for the direct contact now.

He's probably too busy trying to get this issue worked out.

This latest update to foreflight has messed with my ability to 'fast scroll' through the maps. Now it's like the maps are 'randomly sticky' in certain places.

Anybody else notice that? I did get it out of airplane center-lock mode.

iPad mini - It never got 'stuck' on the previous edition.

Its a general symptom I am seeing .. I am using an ipad 2, and as they keep adding features without Apple increasing its processor power, you see display lag .. So far it has been relegated to times I have had a radar display on etc, so its bearable.

The ipad 1 and 2 processors are about the same, except ipad 2 has a dual core CPU for more parallel tasks, however for most tasks you need raw speed and parallelization does not help much.

Dont know what Ipad 3 has for a processor and how much of it goes in driving a higher resolution retina display.

Okay so it doesn't seem like it's a hardware lage issue. It seems like sometimes I will sit ther eand wait for it, and try to move the map and it just won't move at all.

Gotta be a sympton of this whole track up center lock feature

How much free space do you have on your device? It can be found in Settings -> General -> Usage.

If you are close to the full capacity of the flash drive (guessing within 1-2 GB of max capacity) - you can have some serious problems with reading and writing to your storage - which is what you may be seeing. It can slow down even before the flash drive is really full. This is a symptom of flash storage.

Solution will be to do what is called a TRIM operation - which you can do in PCs - not sure how to do that on the iPad - except to erase a large amount of data on the ipad and then reinstall the data. E.g., deleting foreflight and reinstalling and redownloading the charts again

22gb free. Deleted and reinstalled foreflight and reinstalled all data.

Still is weird when scrolling through maps as compared to last update. It's a little too sticky.

Quick question to all you Foreflight users.  Anyone know how to disable the HUD in the Plates view?  Mine seems to cover the bottom of the approach plate in both orientations.

I called Foreflight and left a message and I left the e-mail, but I am flying to the US tomorrow and I would like to have this resolved well before wheels up.

Edit:  Got it!!  Tap anywhere on the plate and the HUD disappears.  Tap anywhere on the plate to bring it back.  Foreflight provided the e-mail.
