TTaylor Posted January 29, 2013 Report Posted January 29, 2013 I decide to add a used GEM-602, yes it is not as nice as the new stuff but I only had the single stock units until now. The question is how do you put one in a 3.5 inch hole? I was thinking no problem, bought the adapter plate and then after drilling the hole for the push button in the adapter reality hit. There is not enough room around the unit to put nuts on the back side of the 3.5 inch holes. What have others done? Quote
Marauder Posted January 29, 2013 Report Posted January 29, 2013 Tim (get that right?), I have mine mounted in a 2.5" hole but the theory should be the same. The adapter plate will mount to the 3.5" hole using screws and nuts and the GEM mounts to the adpater plate using screws only. There shouldn't be any nuts involved with the GEM unit itself. The GEM should have threads to accept machine screws. Am I missing something? Quote

Chris, The size of the GEM unit interferes with the nuts for the adapter plate on the 3.125 holes (actually about 3.5 inch diameter for the holes). The 602 (603 and 610 as well) is 3.6 inches across at the corners and there is no room for the nuts for the screws that hold the adapter plate in place. The 602 will mount on the plate with the screws as you said, but it blocks the holes at the larger diameter and leaves no room for a nut. I have not come up with an elegant solution so far using the adapters and current holes. I can drill holes 45 degrees off that would work but will require drilling in the panel as well. I was hoping to use existing cutouts in the panel Thanks, Tim Quote
Cris Posted January 30, 2013 Report Posted January 30, 2013 Tim- I suspect you are using an off the shelf adapter plate. Insight sells exactly what you want. http://www.insightavionics.com/accessories.htm The size of the 602 and G2 are the same. Call Insight for details and pricing. Quote
Alan Fox Posted January 30, 2013 Report Posted January 30, 2013 Try sheet metal screws into the plate... Quote

TTaylor Posted January 30, 2013 Author Report Posted January 30, 2013 Cris, thanks for the link. That does look like the perfect solution other than cost. I will call but I think I found the price on the webpage, only $90 for the adapter. I think I will try the sheet metal screws first. Quote
