I saw this over on "Red Board" and figured it was worth posting here. Do you think this is a feasable option at your home airport base if there is no car now? I know we had someone talking about a network of airport cars in the past on here.

"Could this be the solution to having an airport car that others could use? I know there was a similar program a few years ago for just airport cars, but if this caught on in the larger cities, there's no reason it couldn't work for small rural airports too...

Car owners who register on the website set the price for their vehicles. The average rate is around $8 an hour or $40 a day, which is approximately 40 percent cheaper than Zipcar and 20 percent cheaper than a traditional car rental like Hertz or Enterprise. While the car is rented out, RelayRides covers the insurance, providing comprehensive and collision coverage up to the actual cash value of the car, plus a $1 million liability insurance policy that protects the owner against claims for third-party injuries and property damage. For car renters, the company adds $300,000 of liability coverage to the driver's existing insurance policy."

This could work. Maybe it could get "crew cars" at airports that currently do not have them. The FBO owner who may be unwilling to let you use his car before could enter his car in the system and get some income to boot. I think this would be good for a longer time frame than the usual crew car.

Sometimes it is hard to get a rental car at small airports.

I have been to some small northeast airports where the rental car was available for short term rent and it seemed as if it was the personal car of the airport manager. Stowe for example. Nice people.

The zipcar thing seems interesting. It's a business and it handles the important details of insurance.

Putting someone in a strange vehicle, and in a strange place, seems like adding a lot of risk to something that is not that risky usually. I didn't even know I was speeding...

I have also got the experience of having a ticket mailed to my address, from France. How would you like to receive a ticket that you were not responsible for initially? Speeding ticket, parking ticket, all the same... They get attached to the registration of the car owner.

If zip cars were at airports, membership would be an excellent idea.

My small airport has Avis cars on the property. So if you are visiting the NYC area and need a rental.... I can probably hook you up...

I like this, especially having the insurance covered. West Texas Airport used to (maybe still does) have a couple airport cars. Keep as long as you like (even multiple days) pay $1/ mile on return. I may sound high but worked out to a really good deal for local transportation. I miss going there. The Vickers Varsity on display was amazing, and the FBO crew was always friendly.

Most times we borrow a crew car I put gas in it or donate $10 or $20 to the airport coffee fund, but it's getting harder to find a crew car. Enterprise will come out to most airports but it's expensive. Not having transportation at a reasonable price prevents us from making a lot of trips we would like to do.

Maybe we should do a roll call of Mooney owners with cars sitting at airports. I have a 2001 Chevy Astro van (8 seat) sitting at PLK Branson, MO.
