Hi there, I am planning on teaching a course at Florida University in Tampa this February. Of course I am thinking of flying my Mooney from Guatemala to Key West and then to Tampa (although I could do Guatemala City Tampa non stop with a ferry tank, it would be an 8 hrs flight and I am not that brave...). The question I have is how is the weather in February and what airport should I use? Tampa Executive, Knight? What would you guys suggest I should do?

If you are teaching at University of South Florida, I would recommend Tampa Executive (VDF). It's a fairly short drive between the airport and the campus. Gas is not cheap - recommend ZPH, BOW, GIF, and LAL for fuel.

I will be in Tampa for about 14 days.

Then Tampa Executive (KVDF) is your logical option. Might even find hanger or covered tiedown. Try calling: Reliable Aviation @ 813-626-4884.

You could probably get a T-hangar at VDF for the month and save $0.50/gallon on fuel for the price of a tiedown anywhere else. SPG is a cooler airport, but quite a bit pricier for parking, but more than $1/gal cheaper on fuel. Sheltair just took over at KSPG and they're still ironing out issues. TPF is a nice airport as well with a very active weekend pilot community with lots of fun airplanes.

Just curious, Oscar... what will you be teaching?

I am going to be teaching a course on infrastructure development (ports, airports and roads) and economic development.
