If it doesn't clear with a power cycle, and all the connections are sound, a trip to a Garmin dealer is the solution.

It did clear. The dealer said they would need to run some tests. It happened after the GFC500 did some funky things when climbing in IAS mode and descending in VS.

Makes sense since the GFC software resides and executes in the GI 275. The GI 275log file should show what errors occured.

Did the AI still track the horizon?  Did the message just pop up unexpectedly?

I'd be a little concerned if that happened while on an approach, but they did provide a nice big 'back' button that would probably bring the screen back to normal.

It happened on initial descent for the approach, it wasn’t holding VS, disconnected and hand flew it in.

The autopilot wasn't working, but it sounds like the attitude indicator functionality was still working OK?

That would seem to be a pretty important question. I keep seeing people advocating these, or G5's, and they're very impressive in terms of features. But I wonder. I feel so much better with a mechanical backup, which just flops over or fails to erect when it's not happy...

Exactly this. I fly IMC all the time in a few aircraft types, and “steam gauges” have always been reliable. At least if a vacuum pump quits you have an electric backup. What’s the backup when software glitches out?

That same electrical backup you are using with the vacuum gyro.

It’s an electrical vacuum pump, but still driving the same gyro instrument. If the instrument itself has failed as in the case above, doesn’t do you any good.
