varlajo Posted August 6 Report Posted August 6 (edited) Has anyone had any luck with a semi-permanent installation of an FAA-approved (for commercial airliners, anyways) compact oxygen concentrators? I am contemplating an addition of a 12V port and a couple of straps in the back of the plane to run one that I can get essentially for free with prescription. Currently looking at a SeQual Eclipse 5, a continuous flow model. Edited August 6 by varlajo Quote
Pinecone Posted August 6 Report Posted August 6 You cannot mount it permanently without it being signed off. But what you are proposing seems to be nothing special. The one that most people in aviation seem to be using is the Imogen G5. They have tested it with 2 people up to 14,000 and 1 person to 18,000. One thing to think about is how getting a prescription for O2 will effect your medical. The Imogen can be bought from a couple of sources without a prescription, but a copy of your pilot certificate. That is how I got mine. I had the shop add a power port (cigarette lighter) in the back for it. Or a cooler. 1 1 Quote

I thought my cigarette lighter was 12v but surprisingly it was 28v and inogen says not to run it off 28v. Have you had any issues running it off 28v? Quote

I purchased the kit that includes a DC-DC converter to convert the 28 volts to 12 volts. https://www.inogenaviator.com/ FYI,, the company selling them to pilots is Main Clinic Supply 1 Quote

I also use a g5, however, I use the batteries currently because the cig power required is significant. I have a 5amp CB on my 12v cig charger and it requires something like a 12amp cb for a 12v system. If you wire one, make sure you get the correct power setup. Quote

Based on my calculations, I need a 10 amp breaker. I know G5 is "rated" to 10,000 ft. Does it work and make a difference at higher altitudes, say 15,000? Quote

Does it work and make a difference at higher altitudes, say 15,000? Yes, it works well. I actually have a splitter and use it for my son and I. I use a pulse ox and it keeps me mid 90s. I’ve used it up to 14,500’ and it works fine, however it was on the highest setting for two of us at that altitude. Be careful with the power required, here’s a picture of my DC power coord for the g5. It seems to say 10amps required, so you’ll need a bigger breaker than that. Actual power draw at different settings was hard (impossible) to find in the manual. 1 Quote
varlajo Posted August 7 Author Report Posted August 7 My outlet is limited at 13.8V so I think I'll have a reasonable margin with a 10A. Quote
