John Pleisse Posted April 25, 2012 Report Posted April 25, 2012 After years of paralysis, the Class D Tower at FDK will open 0700, 5/1/12. AOPA held a seminar at the Frederick Convention Center (FDK Holiday Inn) that had an amazing turn out. Panelists included FAA runway safety consultants, AOPA SF personel, the manager of the DC Tracon and other FAA and NATCA personel, including the new tower controllers. The pros gave a great presentation on the new Class D Airspace to over 1,000 in attendence. The line was out the door! Standing room only. Lot of familiar faces from neighboring HGR, DMW, 2W2, GAI, MRB, W50, JYO and others. A great night for GA and if you want to bone up on runway safety, Class D airspace and even the traffic flow over the DC tracon, the entire presentation will be posted on the AOPA Safety Foundation website this Friday. Just search FDK. Quote
DaV8or Posted April 25, 2012 Report Posted April 25, 2012 Good to hear about the turnout. It's good that people care. Enjoy your new tower! I have to assume it was really needed? Quote

DaV8or Posted April 26, 2012 Report Posted April 26, 2012 Quote: aviatoreb It was really needed in my opinion. Last time I flew there about 18 months ago it was a zoo in the pattern - well very busy compared to what I have ever seen for an untowered airport. I decided not to go back until they get a tower. Seth Posted April 26, 2012 Report Posted April 26, 2012 John- I was there too! Sorry we missed meeting up. Good information at the meeting. I'm the guy that asked about picking up your SFRA squak code before departing toward the SFRA (and of course, not actually entering until given permission by Potomac Approach). It was a good meeting with quite a few people present from many facets fo the FAA. We had an FSDO represtentative, FAST team represetnative, Tower Manager, controllers, Tracon Controlers - it was well done - not enough seats though. -Seth Quote
