Hi all,

While buttoning up the plane after finishing the annual today, my mechanic commented on the "bump out" on the engine nacelle on the pilots side. Looks like maybe a generator once went in this spot or 2nd alternator? What do the M20K and/or Rocket folks think? Just a curiosity. I hadn't noticed until he brought it to my attention.

Rocket specific.

I thought it was to fit the engine in there, but then I would have thought you or your mechanic would have seen a bulge on the side of the engine that matched with the cowling.  So now I'm curious why the bulge is on all Rockets.

No bulge on the copilot side, so I don't know- but I'm sure the "institutional knowledge" of the board denizens will come through for me! :)

I got a confirmation from a Rocket Owner...  Space is for the #6 Rocker Cover.

Assuming it's the angle of the engine, but forgot to ask that.

The Missile 300 also by Rocket Engineering has the same bulge on the pilot side for the IO-550 vs the TSIO-520 in the Rocket 305.  I think the 520 and 550 Continental's have the same dimensions.  As noted by Aviation Consumer "Missile Mod includes a new eight-point engine mount canted 2.3 degrees to the right to counteract torque".  You would think the bulge would be on the right (copilot side).  Perhaps when under full power, the engine is twisting counterclockwise (viewed from cockpit) and canting to the left just a fraction in the Lord/Barry isolating mounts and needs a little extra space.  Call Darwin Conrad.....
