V/s Helps VNAV

Recommended Posts

I posted this to Beechtalk.  Maybe it will help some here.  This  relates to Garmin VNAV.

I use VNAV on virtually every flight I make now.  What a benefit!   Recently I found that, although not written up in any manual I could find, when vectored above the VNAV path, by enabling V/S and setting an appropriate vertical speed, VNAV would become armed from active, V/S would intercept the VNAV profile, VNAV would become active again and continue the automatic step-downs on the approach.  This worked beautifully on both the RNAV approach at KOAR (Marina, California) and KHWD (Hayward, California) in actual conditions this past week.

Yes, i totally agree. VNAV is very powerful and i use it on any approach with step downs before the FAF.
I really like how well it works with any approach that has glide slope as well; real or advisory. As soon as VNAV is active i can push the Aprch button to arm it so that it seamlessly transitions from VNAV to the GS at the FAF.
It enables for CDFA or continuous descent from the start of the approach to the missed approach point.
In addition to using V/S to descend to the VNAV slope you can also raise the altitude constraint in the flight plan to bring it up to your altitude if the angle isn’t to steep.

The problem is VNAV requires you to be navigating via GPS. In my experience, I’m always being vectored, not just intercepting the approach course, but the whole arrival as well. I like the idea, but unless I’m flying VFR I won’t get a chance to use it. Heck, even on flight following I get vectored if close to bravo airspace.

This would be helpful in case someone forgets to dial down the preselect before getting to TOD. :D

I came across that completely by accident within the past week. I forgot to arm VNV. Caught the error after TOD so when I tapped it, it didn't capture. "Oh well, I'll just VS down." Caught up and it captured.

The more we fly these things, the more we learn about them.
