Marauder Posted July 2, 2022 Report Posted July 2, 2022 At first I didn’t think i liked all the airway waypoints either, but came to realize they were actually quite important in busy air space when the controller is trying to give a helpful shortcut direct to some waypoint ahead. When it happens to you, suggest looking ahead on your navigator or iPad for the waypoint before tying up the freq to ask to them spell it or for more clarification. I’ve never not had it be anything but a airway waypoint (or an approach waypoint if getting on the approach).Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkExactly! In the northeast, it is not uncommon for them to give you a direct heading to a waypoint 1 or 2 waypoints ahead on the airway. It’s not too bad to manually type in BUNTS, but when you get “zoo viv”, it’s all together a different game. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro 1 1 Quote

But is that "zoo viv" or ZOMEV? I don't recognize ZOVIV. (And OF COURSE I have every one memorized!! ) 1 Quote
kortopates Posted July 2, 2022 Report Posted July 2, 2022 ... if the knobs are there when you need them. A few weeks ago I was flying along and when I grabbed the inner knob to change frequencies, it literally crumbled in my fingers. This picture shows when the first piece crumbled, then a few minutes later the rest of it did. Yet later the large knob crumbled. The dead giveaway that something was awry was that the rubber on both knobs turned very sticky in a short period of time, I guess a sign that the rubber was breaking down and disintegrating. Luckily, the same knobs are used on a wide variety of Garmin units (ie G1000) and are readily available for an average of $25 per. First I’ve heard of this. By chance is your bird parked outside? But even the flight school trainers with Garmin GPS’s parked on the ramp don’t seem to have this issue. Good to know there is an affordable solution. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote

Add to the mix that the unit is now 11 years old. 1 Quote

It looks like overload but it makes life easier in the long run. @David Lloyd, I'm not sure when I really care how far ENO is unless it's the next waypoint but if I do want to know, I figure I' far enough away for the 2-3 taps to bring up the information to not be a big deal. (Scroll to ENO > tap on ENO > Tap on INFO) 1 Quote
David Lloyd Posted July 2, 2022 Report Posted July 2, 2022 Airplane is still broken so I loaded up the Garmin simulator. A nice easy, long flight plan, direct CLT V20 LIT HOT. What 8 VORs, at least 50 intersections? Eman's suggestion, delete button the waypoint would work, but way too many. It would be easier just to enter the VORs to begin with. Funny, I still remember all the VOR frequencies except Marvel. That was added after flying that route so many times. Also see the point about the ATC shortcut, and can see that having the intersections in the flight plan already would be mighty handy. Instead of scrambling trying to find SCAPE on the map, look for it in the flight plan first. Scroll to ENO > tap on ENO > Tap on INFO. Thanks for the reminder, its all just a few taps away. Quote
M20F Posted July 5, 2022 Report Posted July 5, 2022 I personally don’t understand why anyone would get a 750. 99% of what you pay for is a bigger screen which an iPad can serve as a cheaper solution. I have a 650 and 430 and echoing the other comments here the GTN is fantastically better if you have to deal with SID/STAR/Airways. It is such a perfect unit I am at a loss as to what Garmin will ever be able to do to sell a new version at some point. Quote

I have a 750 and 650 and the only thing I use my 650 for is the time to TOD (which I want to know) and the ETA at destination (which my wife wants to know). Anything the 650 does is easier and clearer on the 750. I think the moving map on the 650 is kind of annoying but on the 750 it’s pretty clear. I just use the iPad for approach plates and the Foreflight glide amoeba. 1 Quote
