Remember, if you live in California and have a plane that is 35+ years old, you can eliminate the property tax by "displaying" it 12X per year.  Many airports make it as easy as opening your hangar for 2 hours on a given day.  The display days do not have to all be at the same airport.  If you plan a little, you can combine a breakfast run and display your airplane.

Larry

True but you also cannot use the airplane for "general transportation". Here is the relavant section of the code.

Always amazes me that people who don't live here, and in some cases have never even set foot in this state, have such strong opinions on where the rest of us should live and take every opportunity to remind us of those opinions.

Exactly!  When I first bought my plane my hangar neighbors kept telling me I should employ the exemption....when I educated them on the actual rule, they thought I was just being silly!  Well, I figure if the Kalifornia Tax department ever decides it want to enforce this, my buddies are going to be looking at a nasty penalty, back taxes, and interest.  Not a risk I want to take.

They must be jealous….  :)

Or…

They don’t like the nice weather, relaxed pace, or the palm trees….

Or it could be the ability to have outdoor furniture… and use it all year long…

Maybe they have an old car they can’t drive 3/4 of the time… snow, salt, ice, rain….

hmmmmmm….

You get all THAT and complain about a few extra AMUs every year….

Come hang out in the Garden State….

Where They beat you up on income tax, property tax, and tolls…

our gasoline taxes are lower than many states… for the EV drivers in the crowd… we got the nuclear powered electricity….

Everything else seems to be free….  :)

Go Garden State!

:)

Hey, no kidding!  I'm a native and really don't want to live anywhere else.

Never had the pleasure of chipping ice off the windshield of my car.  My car doesn't rust out from salt. I don't have to buy snow tires. I don't have to use a scuba tank to breathe when it's 99% humidity outside.  No insects the size of small drones.  I can ski and surf on the same day.  I can work on the plane in the dead of winter without a heated hangar.  Shall I go on?  Yeah, really sucks to live here <sarcasm>

Given how high California real estate continues to climb, my conclusion is that a WHOLE LOT of people must disagree with the critics:D

You wouldn't believe how much I heard when I moved to WV then AL, all from people who'd never visited.

But we ALL see stupid $6-$7/gal Kalifornia gas on the evening News, don't need to visit for that. TV and movies, all made in Kali, show the world the crowding, traffic and pollution.

I'm originally from MS.  I could easily be happy back in MS, or TN or TX.  But I like it in CA too (just not the politicians, fuel prices and taxes).  You can't have everything; you just have to choose.  CA has been good to us but it's nice to be from somewhere else.  It's good to know you have an off ramp if ever needed.  BTW, for some reason, I'm suddenly hungry for catfish and hush puppies.

I've been to a lot of places, and I do NOT need to live there to know I don't want to!

Again, if California sucked as bad as you imply, then real estate would simply NOT be so expensive.  Clearly the high taxes and gas prices do NOT offset the advantages or people would NOT move here.

It's getting too much for many people to put up with. Enough people left Kali that you're losing a Congress Critter (House of Representatives are portioned out by state population as reported in the U.S. Census, 2020 should have been a wakeup cause people are leaving and Kali will have one less Rep to elect this fall).

I worked part time in SoCal for 25 years and for the last five of those years (2013-2018) was there half time. If I never step foot in California again I would be perfectly fine with it. The only redeeming quality of the state, to me at least, is the ocean. Lots of places have nice oceans.

If you're happy there, more power to you. It isn't unlike NYC and Manhattan specifically. Many, many people don't know anything else and would never consider living anywhere else. Anything west of the Hudson is a vast wasteland. I make 5-6 trips per year to NYC nowadays and love it for 2-3 days at a time but would never live there either.

Well, that's just swell.

As ZuluZulu pointed out, why is necessary for others to run down California???  WTF?

I mean, I could go denigrate places others live, but I don't see the reason to make cracks like, "If I never set foot in Arizona again it would perfectly fine with me."

Why do you?

We're just agreeing with the OP, who's been slamming the Republik throughout this thread.

Too much piling on?

Perhaps.  But, this thread is NOT the first time; it's pretty common around here to bash California.  Should I start in on Alabama?

The numbers are against you…

There are 49 other great states…

Bashing kali is easy… one post, done….  :)

Bashing 49 other states… that’s a huge amount of work…

first, visit 49 other states to get the experience to bash them….  This could take a lifetime…

Bashing Alabama… very few will have the same experience to understand where your humor comes from…

Kali has so much wackiness going on all the time… broadcast on popular TV… Live…

If an industry giant, slaps a famous comedian in public, in NJ…

Nobody cares…

In Kali, everyone wants to know if the offender gets sued, or does he apologize…?  Will he ever work in this town again?

If it were real… the comedian would have been sleeping in the middle of the floor… surrounded by a fair amount of his own red liquids…

The offender was uncontrollably angry… but he remembered to use the control required to not completely deck the comedian….

Go Kali!  :)

Best regards,

It's getting too expensive for many people to afford to live here.  Yet again, as long as property values continue to climb it proves there are people willing to pay a hefty premium to live here.

That’s gone now. Now you have to sign a form that you only took the plane to another airport for display or maintenance. This happened 3 years ago under the definition of “general transportion” which is prohibited

It’s so busy nobody goes there anymore.

I couldn't live in Al.  I could never wear Houndstooth and I don't look good in Crimson.

I lived in small town AL in 1983/84 for my first year of college.  I imagine it’s changed in the last 40 years, but I saw things I’d just as soon not see again, lower taxes or not.

Well as I said I lived there 42 years. I remember when San Jose only had one Chevrolet dealership and the only freeway was Hwy 101. We remember how CA used to be, #1 schools, modest taxes, low crime and what has become and it breaks our hearts.

That's true in a lot of places, though.    I grew up (mostly) in western South Dakota and I could say the same about there.

I've been in AZ for 37 years and it's similar here, too.

"Do you know the way to San Jose"..........................

I remember when So Cal Orange County was mostly orange groves, Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm. :)
