I am working my way through a case of Champion filters.  On the filter itself it says to use DC4 and if that is unavailable to use engine oil, so I have been using engine oil.  I have heard good things about the tempest filters so I may switch when done with my current supply of Champions.

Some Lycoming engines such as the IO-360-A3B6D have an oil filter adapter with it’s own rubber gasket between the filter and the accessory case. It is important to lube the filter gasket (except Tempest) and not over torque the filter so that the filter doesn’t adhere to and rotate the adapter during removal which can damage the adapter gasket causing a serious oil leak.

@PT20J Skip, I'm going through my first oil change, and the oil filter (a Tempest) was indeed a bit hard to remove. Is there a way to know if the adapter was rotated or not? Also, in the event that adapter gasket is damaged and leaking, is something that would be easy to identify after the first runup after oil change?

When this happened to me the adapter was noticeably loose after the filter was removed. I took the adapter off and noticed a cut in the rubber gasket, so I ordered a gasket and replaced it before replacing the filter. After that, I always checked that the adapter was tight after removing the filter. I never had a problem again. You’d have a major leak if that gasket failed - same as the oil filter gasket.
