jsigmon Posted September 4, 2021 Report Posted September 4, 2021 Canceled a flight today when notice on T/O roll not making full MP took cowl off and examined exhaust and turbocharger. this color on turbocharger only thing noticed thoughts Quote
carusoam Posted September 4, 2021 Report Posted September 4, 2021 JS, Good call! That looks like it would be an exhaust leak… Oddly, your avatar says you fly an M20R… Most M20Rs that I’m familiar with don’t have any snail looking turbo houses… You might want to edit your title… to include the words Acclaim turbo exhaust leak to go with that… Let me invite @M20Doc to stop by… 1) Is that an Acclaim? 2) What side of the turbo is leaking… engine side inlet, or atmospheric side exit…? 3) Keep in mind high pressure, hot exhaust leaks are deadly serious… Good catch. PP guesses only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a- Quote
Mcstealth Posted September 4, 2021 Report Posted September 4, 2021 Is that flange between the bolts supposed to be bubbled up like that? Quote
GeeBee Posted September 4, 2021 Report Posted September 4, 2021 Hot spot on the housing. I would do a spin test. Quote

Jim F Posted September 4, 2021 Report Posted September 4, 2021 Spin test as Gee-Bee recommends, Pressurize the exhaust with the pressure side of a shop vac and soapy water, inspect the turbine blades. Colors on exhaust can be effected by oils and such. Quote

Colors on exhaust can be effected by oils and such. if those color stains on housing and rest of exhaust normal on examination, would it be safe to fly a short hop (75nm)to maintenance facility.? it’s making just 2” below max MP and again, It could be that color has always been there and not related. The plane is new to me or id know. Unfortunately my home airport is remote without service. So can have engine pulled and shipped and then replaced very easily Quote
GeeBee Posted September 4, 2021 Report Posted September 4, 2021 I think before you fly it for maintenance, you need to have a qualified mechanic at least look the airplane over to insure it is safe for ferry to a maintenance facility. An engine that will not develop full power is trying to send you a message. 2 Quote
thinwing Posted September 8, 2021 Report Posted September 8, 2021 that pinkish stain could be oil components burning off...id do a runup with cowling off... Quote
carusoam Posted September 12, 2021 Report Posted September 12, 2021 Got a CO monitor for the new plane? Always good to assist with turbo/exhaust leaks…. The challenge with oil leaks… it may only be a drip every hour… and you caught it early… There is no rule that it will stay only a drip every hour… it can turn into a quart every minute… without notice… Oil dripping on the turbo case won’t win any friends…. Some parts of the turbo cases can get red hot…. Hot enough to light an oil fire… So…. Knowing what that is, is going to be important for your next steps… There was an issue with Acclaim turbos….(?) See if @mike_elliott is familiar… he had a pic and a discussion recently… Best regards, -a- Quote
