When you're new to them, they're hard on tires.

They are, but they are easy on the hydraulic system and the master cylinder attachment points etc as lower pressure is required for the same braking force. Pads as there are twice as many last a whole lot longer too, more than twice as long, I like them, they are like power brakes on a car.

‘Maybe trivia but dual pucks are very often required when you put bushwheels on other aircraft, the larger tires turn slower RPM so more brakes are required.

Part of aircraft Certification requirements are that brakes have to hold with the throttle at full power without excessive force on the pedals, the tires can slide, but the wheels can’t rotate, assumption is that single pucks won’t pass here.
