TravelVeteran Posted November 4, 2020 Report Posted November 4, 2020 I was told i should replace these blue o-ring seals annually. Anyone know where to buy them? My A&P said there's someone on this forum that sells them. Shaw Aero Devices Part number: 457-1015-12 ?? Not sure exactly. Tried contacting them with no luck.1965 MOONEY M-20C MARK 21 N5673Q SN 3035 TYPE CERT 2A3 PROD CERT 201 Quote
DonMuncy Posted November 4, 2020 Report Posted November 4, 2020 It is my understanding that the gas cap O-rings must be inspected yearly. Most A&Ps just replace them, as the cost to inspect makes the O-ring cost miniscule. However, the blue ones last FAR longer than one year. 1 Quote

They generally have the old version in stock. Lasar in California, they are an msc. 1 Quote

They need a visual inspection and if there are no cracks there's no reason to replace. When I was using the black ones I replaced them every year. Either of them are cheap enough that if it makes you feel better, replace them every year. 1 Quote

OSUAV8TER Posted November 5, 2020 Report Posted November 5, 2020 The Shaw 457 are generally not a serviceable fuel cap from my understanding. You already have a special fluorosilicone ring installed so if it isnt giving you trouble, fly on! 2 Quote

Hank Posted November 5, 2020 Report Posted November 5, 2020 I got a set from @OSUAV8TERthey almost two years ago. There's no visible aging or cracking, and my newest IA didn't mention them at annual in the spring. Quote

If you disassemble the cap to replace the small o-ring, a healthy slathering of petrolatum in there will help keep things happy. Likewise smearing some on the large o-ring helps keep it happy. The petrolatum is also compatible with the fuel should some of it fall in the tank. https://www.applerubber.com/src/pdf/table-h.pdf 2 Quote
David Lloyd Posted November 5, 2020 Report Posted November 5, 2020 I've got the same 457 caps and could not find the large o-ring. Not a circular cross section, it might be available from Shaw. On mine, the large o-ring was in good shape, it was the small o-ring in the center that was leaking. The small o-rings are standard rings. Viton is available too. 1 Quote

JimB Posted November 5, 2020 Report Posted November 5, 2020 On my aircraft there is an Airworthiness Directive 85-24-03 mandating compliance with SB 20-229a and the SB specifies specific PNs for the O-rings, I use those O-rings. PNs MS29513-338 (small center o-ring) and MS29513-010 (outer larger o-ring). I'm sure the blue fluorosilicone are better and last longer https://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgAD.nsf/AOCADSearch/9C93312CAD9E7AAB86256A4D00490B41?OpenDocument https://cdn2.hubspot.net/hubfs/4147179/technical_documents/service_bulletins/sbm20-229a.pdf 1 Quote
Guest Posted November 5, 2020 Report Posted November 5, 2020 (edited) Those caps appear to be the type used with O&N fuel bladders. The seals can’t be replaced to my knowledge. Clarence Edited November 5, 2020 by M20Doc Quote
