rotorman Posted August 19, 2020 Report Posted August 19, 2020 I'm in the process of changing out my engine. The propeller shop informed me that I has some worn out parts that were due to the propeller hub running dry of grease. I had never seen any signs that it was sling grease. The shop also said they recommend an inspection every 6 years. This recommendation came as news to me. Quote
StevenL757 Posted August 19, 2020 Report Posted August 19, 2020 If you have a Hartzell propeller, it should be greased every annual. Was there a question to go along with your post? Quote
47U Posted August 19, 2020 Report Posted August 19, 2020 Really sorry to hear this. What prop do you have and how long had it been since last IRAN/OH... hours/years. Was it a hub that’s supposed to be greased periodically? My McCauley 3-blade just came back from its third overhaul. It’s 30 years old. Double the cost of last time, right under 5 amu. tom Quote
Bolter Posted August 19, 2020 Report Posted August 19, 2020 If you need a prop shop: http://www.nwpropeller.com/ was recommended to me, and convenient to you as you drive between Bend and Seattle. (KPLU, Puyallup). I got good help from them remotely, and ended up not needing to go in (never charged). Quote
carusoam Posted August 20, 2020 Report Posted August 20, 2020 1) You didn't see any grease leave the prop... 2) Did you see any grease go in the prop? See if Mr. Stallings is around for propellor insight.... @Cody Stallings Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
PT20J Posted August 20, 2020 Report Posted August 20, 2020 +1 for NW Propeller. Dick Jacob and crew are great. He’s one of the few shops around that still do the big Hamilton Standard props. He overhauled the props on the museum DC-3. He did a reseal on my McCauley (he talked me out of a more expensive overhaul and saved me a lot of money and blade life). Skip 2 Quote
jetdriven Posted August 20, 2020 Report Posted August 20, 2020 My McCauley prop has 3000 hours since new, and two reseals but still going good. Quote

Cody Stallings Posted August 20, 2020 Report Posted August 20, 2020 If it’s a McCauley they will do that over time. they may leak just a little grease, an it never really turns into a giant grease leak to make you worry, that’s because there isn’t much grease in them to begin with. wanna keep an eyes on a grease filled prop, once you notice a slight leak it’s time to do something about it to keep the cost down 1 Quote

I guess you have to remove it and send it to the prop shop for the inspection. I don't know of anyone who does this every 6 years. Quote
