Aspen2013 Posted April 20, 2020 Report Posted April 20, 2020 On 2008 Acclaim the CAMLOC fasteners on the top engine cowl have a grommet style base. I believe these are the 4002 series. There is an installation tool used to install the snap ring on the back side. My question is how do you get the snap ring off? The tool in the picture is to install. The other picture shows the snap ring (very small) on the back side of cowling. Quote
hypertech Posted April 20, 2020 Report Posted April 20, 2020 I don't know, but why do you want to get it off? If you are trying to get the fastener out, that can be done without removing that. Quote
Aspen2013 Posted April 20, 2020 Author Report Posted April 20, 2020 Actually you cannot get the fastener out of the grommet assembly without removing that snap ring, it is a great design because you never lose the CAMLOC and the grommet really saves wear and tear on the cowl surface. I think they never wanted them to come out. I want to paint the top of the cowl. These suckers are also hard to tape off. Quote
hypertech Posted April 20, 2020 Report Posted April 20, 2020 Unless they did something special on the acclaim, you can get them out. Use the special camloc pliers to compress the spring and they can be removed. Can't help you on the painting though. Quote

Use 2 small common blade screwdrivers, one inserted into the gap to spread the ring and a second one to pry the ring from the grommet. Clarence Quote
Aspen2013 Posted April 21, 2020 Author Report Posted April 21, 2020 That slot barely fits a utility knife blade. Tried to spread it with that and it likes to spin on you. Tough one Quote
carusoam Posted April 21, 2020 Report Posted April 21, 2020 Dremel tool probably gets mentioned around here as well... but there is a high risk of cutting more than just the camloc parts... I got the honor of removing rusty ones from my 65C... and the cowl was aluminum... Going with Clarence’s idea... at least comes with a lot of background experience... Aspen, did you at least get the pliers to easily remove the fastener? Best regards, -a- Quote

Aspen2013 Posted April 21, 2020 Author Report Posted April 21, 2020 Will try it again with a small screwdriver or maybe modify it smaller and thinner. Thank you Clarence. Quote
tmo Posted April 22, 2020 Report Posted April 22, 2020 Reading these forums I'm at a point where if certain folks say I need to stab my hand with a screwdriver as part of removing something, I'd seriously consider it.... With that in perspective, grinding down a screwdriver because M20Doc says you need to do so sounds like a no-brainer 1 Quote
Steve2 Posted April 28, 2020 Report Posted April 28, 2020 These are what you need to remove the fastener from the grommet. https://store.skybolt.com/sk-4p3-p686.aspx As for removing the retainer from the rear of the grommet I've used a sharp pick and a skinny flat bladed screwdriver, after some practice you don't stab yourself too often. Alternatively you can use these. https://store.skybolt.com/sk-t27-p4960.aspx Steve........ 2 Quote
