All,

It’s not easy to understand from the description, reviews, posts, etc, the difference between the Orion 600 and 650 (other than the price).  I’m replacing my strobes, anti collision and wonder what the pros and cons are to each. Looks like either would work fine. 1978 M20J 201 12v. Flat wing tip. Thoughts???

Regards,

Bryan

Correction: Its the 650E that is not enclosed (that's what I have).  Looks like the difference is whether it has the rear position light.  From Aircraft Spruce Q/A:

Q: Does the Whelen Orion 650 Series Lighting have a Rear Position White Light separate from the strobe for use on aircraft that have no rear position light mounted on the tail?

No, this light does not have the rear position light. Take a look at P/N# 11-11365 or in other words the Orion 600 Series. This light would have the rear position light.

I installed Orion 650s on my 1978 J with flat wing tips. Very happy to lose the strobe boxes and I’ve been told the strobes are visible from 30 miles at night (had some friends in a car with a radio watch me pass them on the highway)

So the big difference is where the white rear facing light goes....

Some Mooneys have a plastic enclosure on the front corner of the wing.... and the white light goes at the back of the wing...

Best regards,

The 600s are a bit brighter than the 650s.

I’m very happy with the 600s.

77J flat wingtip.

How did you mount yours? Pics?

Same hold pattern.  The wire holes don’t match up exactly between the Orion and the old Grimes.  Rather than cut another awkward hole in the side of the wing, I used a grommet and there is enough space under the flange of the Orion that the wires don’t get pinched.
