Might have been MVFR at the time. 

 

Been sitting here here today hoping fo fog to burn off, just a reminder to not even think of pushing the envelope

You're right KIAH was 1000 OVC 10 mi. visibility at the time, looks like he was VFR on top and ATC was trying to help him get through it before he ran out of fuel.

It's frustrating reading news articles on crashes. Reporters rarely seem to have any clue about what they're reporting on. Either that... or they intentionally report the story to get a "fearful narrative" across. 

In the article it also shows the Sheriff's "tweeting" reports about a crash incident he seemed to know very little about... I suppose I shouldn't be too shocked.

People are afraid of GA because of a never-ending stream of misinformation.

True...but that doesn't belie the fact that there are far too many GA accidents.
