Knuckledragger00 Posted January 9, 2019 Report Posted January 9, 2019 I had the Stratus with FF on my prior Mooney. Now have a G1000 Bravo and was wondering if Sirius XM weather is worth the extra dough? Thanks in advance. Quote
Bob_Belville Posted January 9, 2019 Report Posted January 9, 2019 I dropped Sirius XM when I got ADS-B weather with a GTN750/GDL88. Some folks here say the Sirius XM has some advantage over ADS-B but I view a Stormscope as more important than either one. YMMV 1 Quote
David Medders Posted January 9, 2019 Report Posted January 9, 2019 XM is only worth the money if you fly on less than CAVU days and really understand how to interpret presented data. The XM combination of echo tops, cells, lightning, and reflectivity provide an excellent view of storm structure. ADS-B is completely inadequate for any serious weather flying. Like any aircraft system, you must study and understand XM and NEXRAD to take proper advantage. Cheers, David 2 Quote

David Medders Posted January 9, 2019 Report Posted January 9, 2019 NEXRAD is the source radar that feeds both XM and ADS-B. Baron for XM WX and WDT for SiriusXM process Level 2 NEXRAD data using their own algorithms to create products for delivery via Sirius XM satellites. ADS-B is completely opaque regarding data flow from NEXRAD to FIS-B broadcast. It APPEARS ADS-B is using Level 3 NEXRAD products with the only change being resolution reduction for the long-range reflectivity picture. Cheers 1 Quote
Danb Posted January 9, 2019 Report Posted January 9, 2019 David I couldn’t agree more, this summer I was on a long cross country avoiding thunderstorms, while comparing Sirius XM with Adsb with Stormscope and visual, taking photos to compare later the Sirius IMO was better than Adsb while the Stormscope allowed for more tactical avoidance. This is my opinion only it seems as though XM is getting faster response than before. Quote
Knuckledragger00 Posted January 10, 2019 Author Report Posted January 10, 2019 I do have the stormscope as well as active traffic both on the G1000 already so maybe I could save a few bucks with the Stratus and FF combo? Not as clean but I am so familiar with FF and am still getting used to the G1000 so I am torn... Quote
carusoam Posted January 10, 2019 Report Posted January 10, 2019 There are a few threads discussing various sources of the same data... Essentially an ADSB vs XM discussion... How often each data set was updated... what the lag in the data is before it can be made available to even send... The clarity of the grapghic data... the monthly cost... XM is available while on the ground... ADSB is free-ish but not very useable until 1k’agl or so in some places... Time has changed all of the issues... frequently... You really have to know how old the data really is when you receive it.... Tactical route planning is a storm scope kind of device... staying out of lightening strike areas... The bundled graphics are just too old to be used tactically... you can probably find a few threads where people gave up the XM after a while based on the cost.... PP thoughts only, not a CFI... Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
