A friend of mine just called and informed me that a Mooney crashed due to engine failure last evening near KPOV.  The story he has is that the owner of the airplane had a husband/wife who were interested in purchasing 1/3 share of the airplane were flying up to Hopkins for an inspection.  Tanks were full.  One of the wings was torn off when the plane hit a tree 50' AGL.

2 people were flown out and the third (I believe to be the pilot) was taken by ambulance to the hospital.  No fatalities at this point.

Lets hope everyone makes a speedy recovery.

They are lucky to be alive....the Mooney has an amazingly stout airframe. One heck of a picture. I wonder if the cockpit top was cut off to get at the passengers.

Crashes like these make me think about the Amsafe airbag seat belts. Wonder if they would have helped these folks. These damn engines quit way too often!

If it is an Ovation then I have an STC for it. The M20J and M20K STC are in the works. This would be clasiffied a "survivable" accident and the airbags would have prevented head and torso trauma. From the wreckage it seems to be a 9+ G accident.

It's terrible.  I don't see any discernible parts. I can't see A pillars or anything.  Hope the unfortunate folks are going to be ok.  What happened to result in such a messy accident? There are pieces all over the place.  Terrible.

If tanks were full it's good to see it didn't catch on fire.  NTSB should be able to find the cause of this one.  I hope the pilot and passengers recover quickly.

Look above and to the right of the seat assembly.  You will see the pillars nipped and the roof peeled back like a sardine can.  Wonder if "Jaws of Life" cut through those tubes.  If any fuel present, I would not want to use a spark producing saw.

I tell you the photos and the video are just stunning, and a testament to the strength of the Mooney "wing".  Wow.  I hope all recover fully. My thoughts are with the pilot and passengers.
