My '74 had a doghouse and fixed cowl flaps.  When I bought my plane the doghouse needed several cracks repaired which I did under IA supervision.  I speculated that these cracks were caused by vibration and made an effort to have my prop balanced periodically.  This completely stopped the progressive cracking for the 25 years I owned my C.

There is a lot of dissatisfaction with the doghouse in general, but i believe a well adjusted/maintained doghouse is fine.  Even on the hottest Atlanta days, my CHTs stayed in the green.  Fixed cowl flaps removed an item to be maintained.
