Badmoonraising Posted October 11, 2017 Report Posted October 11, 2017 I would like to fly Kelowna, B.C. to Fallbrook, CA. Kelowna is located in the centre of the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. I would clear customs just over the border North of Omak, Washington. Ideally I'd like to fly a route away from large centers with congested airspace. The next challenge is getting into Fallbrook which is just south east of Camp Pendleton. Are there experience pilots out there whom have flown these destinations?
jaylw314 Posted October 11, 2017 Report Posted October 11, 2017 Haven't flown to Canada or that whole route, but some thoughts: Friday Harbor KFHR is a port of entry and away from the SeaTac class B. Can be tricky to find transient parking if it's a nice weekend. If you fly over Mt Shasta/Redding, you'll want >10k feet and some oxygen Flying down through the California central valley avoids the SFO class B There is no realistic way to avoid the LAX class B. If you get the TAC chart, they list a bunch of VFR routes that speed things up immensely. If you're IFR, you may get a LOT of rerouting South of LAX, it's pretty clear except for the airspace around Pendleton and Miramar. SoCal approach is very helpful for flight following and not terribly busy in that sector. Haven't flown into Fallbrook
Igor_U Posted October 11, 2017 Report Posted October 11, 2017 If I were you, I’d stay east of Cascades for better weather at this time of the year. Fly south on V25 to Deschutes (DSD) VOR and follow V165 to Mustang (FMG) VOR. Then V105 all the way to V394 just SE of Las Vegas. Then you can more or less follow V394 towards the coast. Cheap fuel can be had up in Bend, OR - KBDN (You can get a Mercedes crew car for few hours) or Yerington, NV – O43 just south of Reno. No class B on your way and you can easy skip by Class C around Reno. Seattle Center Radar coverage is great all the way to CA border, however Oakland will lose you if you’re bellow 13k feet until closer to KRNO. After that, you are good. There’s a lot of desert out there as you go south but scenery is spectacular from the air. While IFR MEAs are high in some areas, terrain isn’t and you should be good with your E model. I never had problem coming form SEA in my F all the way to LAS that way. Enjoy your flight.
