As @M20Doc says, the bend piece of aluminum acting as a trough is what I always use and hardly ever spill a drop.
mooneyflyfast Posted June 7, 2017 Report Posted June 7, 2017 This is the best way that I have come up with to drain the filter. Be sure to put a cotter pin to secure the hose to the funnel.. Manuver the funnel under the filter, make several holes with a sharp nail and loosten the filter until the holes are down. Let drain overnight.

I have the Tempest torque wrench but use a standard socket to get the filter off. The oil filter band might be handy if the filter isn't cooperating. What is the offset socket gizmo? Torque wrench? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro The filter clamp works with a 3/8" drive breaker bar. I do think the Tempest filters may be thinner gauge than the Champions, more often than not I had to wrestle with the hex nut end slipping so I've gotten to where I use the big boy to start with. The adapter on the torque wrench fits the 1" filter "nut". If you keep the angle at about 90 deg you do not have to make any allowance for more leverage which you should do if it were straight out. (On my E there is not enough clearance from the fire wall behind the filter to use a socket on the torque wrench.) The torque spec for the filter is 16-18 ft lb. I shoot for the low end of that. The filter threads are long and fine and if you put DC-4 on the gasket it is most unlikely to leak. You'll wind up with a longish safety wire but that filter is not going anywhere. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/pages/ep/oilfilters_zwrenches/1201676.php Here's a filter wrench but verify the size before ordering, I'm not sure that's the exact one I have. Grainger, Zoro and other supply houses carry Westward and others. https://www.google.com/search?q=zoro+oil+filter+wrench&ie=&oe=#q=zoro+oil+filter+wrench&tbm=shop&spd=3953909021626625678&spf=1496869432764 2
