bradp Posted December 17, 2016 Report Posted December 17, 2016 We had freezing rain / drizzle / fog here this morning. I thought it would be fun to post the skew Ts from a perfunctory flight from PIT to ORD crossing a warm front and a cold front. Screen grab from foreflight shows pireps for icing. exM20K Posted December 17, 2016 Report Posted December 17, 2016 Brad, Good call. I picked up 1/2" of clear ice on my car driving from west 'burbs to O'hare this morning. Freezing drizzle is nothing to mess with. Quote
Bennett Posted December 17, 2016 Report Posted December 17, 2016 You guys make me glad I live in California. Yeah, I know we do get some icing in winter, but nothing like the rest of the country. I once picked up an amazing amount of ice in just a few minutes over the Sierras, and when ATC told me "stand by" when I asked for higher, I just said "unable" and climbed - 1000' was all that was needed, and I just knew I couldn't stay at my current altitude. I did tell ATC what I was doing, and if they wouldn't approve, I would declare an emergency. Yes, this is a bit of an aggressive attitude on my part, but better than crashing. I didn't get to be an old pilot by being meek in the cockpit. PIC means just that. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1 Quote
bradp Posted December 18, 2016 Report Posted December 18, 2016 I wasn't even considering flying today (work day for me) and I had a slip and slide on the way in with about an inch of ice that had fallen. I just wanted to post the skew t diagrams to show vs reality. They really are pretty useful- I wish I had learned about them earlier. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
