flyboy0681 Posted October 20, 2016 Report Posted October 20, 2016 While visiting the new 9/11 Memorial over this past weekend, I came across this ad on display from 1966. It was an attempt to stop the building of the World Trade Center because it would cause a hazard to aircraft around the New York area. Notice the picture. Quote
carusoam Posted October 20, 2016 Report Posted October 20, 2016 Build it, and they will come... if a plane were to accidently hit the towers then, they were going to accidently hit many other buildings in the same area. 1000' AGL, 5-10 miles away from three NY/NJ airports. The people that owned the other buildings were not very happy about the competition the new office towers were going to bring. The complaining and danger warnings went on for decades until the towers were full of renters and employees and restaurants and companies in the 80's. The Freedom tower has just recently opened their doors for business. CNBC aired a story about all the details and the museum. Capitalism and freedom are alive! Best regards, -a- Quote
Andy95W Posted October 22, 2016 Report Posted October 22, 2016 And during World War II, a B-25 hit the Empire State Building. 1 Quote
wishboneash Posted October 25, 2016 Report Posted October 25, 2016 I was watching a program on forensics and it was mentioned that the WTC were designed to handle direct hit by aircraft Boeing 707 aircraft at "approach speeds". What happened on 9/11 was the planes (757s) were diving into the towers at over 500mph. Big difference in energy. Plus the fuel ignited and weakened the steel locally which eventually gave way causing the buildings to pancake downwards. The second tower that got hit lower, came down first as a result of the weight above it was much bigger. The builders didn't account for this scenario. 2 Quote
