mooniac58 Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 No, there won't be any fees for using this site - ever. At some point I might get some Mooney service and part providers to sponsor it for really cheap - just to cover operating costs... Once I massively improve the moderator features this forum came with I would love to add some trusted members as mods. Luckily this community is 1500% more mature than the video game websites I am used to operating, so I am guessing it will be pretty tame here starting out. Quote
mooniac58 Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 Dang Roberto, I love your Mooney! Some day perhaps Quote

GeorgePerry Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 When I was racing Spec e30 BMW's regularly we had the same issues as we started our site. If the newbee didn't already have a race car, the moderator asked them to write a short essay to describe thier interest in the series that he could review and decide on "membership". This worked well. Whomever Craig chooses as moderators could do the same with aircraft owners. They should submit N number registration info. Plane should be a Mooney and the registration should match the person asking for membership...or thier company for LLC's. If the person trying to join doesn't own a Mooney then the "essay" method is about as good as you can get. It's certainly not fool proof but at least it sets a standard Quote

There aren't enough of us here yet....we just need to keep those Bellanca Super Viking guys out of here (for those of you who follow the AOPA forums) Quote

RobertoTohme Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 Craig, One suggestion lifted from DAA (again...) As this thread is growing larger, Is it possible to add a button labeled "go to first unread" when you open the thread? I don't know if it's cookie based or plain black magic, but at DAA the computer seems to know where I left on each thread since last time I was on it... It's somewhat confusing having to go through all of the posts reviewing where I left last time, and jumping to the last page may cause to miss some postings. What do you think? Quote

Cool suggestion I will add something like this to my list of to-dos. You might already know of this but there is a little link on the main view of topics right under the last poster that will let you jump to the newest post. Not quite what you are asking for but convenient if a topic gets to be 10 pages long Quote
jkerr Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 I know it sounds like a good idea to charge users, but I would not recommend changing this site to a pay for use one. It will be hard enough to get people to use the site in the first place. Some I'm sure will pay, but most will not. You will loose the audience that makes this forum valuable. It should be free to people so they will contribute their knowledge and time to the board as well as benefit from it. What most do is sell ad space in order to generate revenue. Ads can be done tastefully without interfering with the membership. You could also create product discussion forums. Often times vendors will over discounts to members while also paying a commission to the board for sales. There are lots of ways to make money without charging the membership. FWIW, the site onehundreddollarhamburger.com is a good example of a well known site that has deteriorated after creating a pay to use model. When they implemented the subscription service many of the contributors left the site. Why update to it if you can’t benefit from it? Quote
mooniac58 Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 No, this site will never ask for your money unless it is in a volunteer donation fashion. If I need to raise funds to support the site I am pretty confident I can get some sponsors from Mooney related companies. I sell advertising all day long for my other "for profit" websites so that is a natural thing to me I am a firm believer that the most successful sites are free to the end users. Quote
Mcstealth Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Quote: GeorgePerry I agree that strap hangers with no hope of ever owning a Mooney are probably not good for the site. Craig will have to do some policing as things mature. Quote
TurboExec Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 I'm with McStealth, anyone even remotely interested in learning about Mooneys should be able to join. This site just needs a good set of moderators to kick anyone interested in starting arguements or throwing up there spam...that's not a pretty picture Quote
eaglebkh Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Quote: Mcstealth I am not with you guys on this one. I may or may not ever own a Mooney, but don't feel I should be excluded. My father was an engineer for Mooney in and during the Lopresti years, I still live in Kerrville, and I fly/rent out of ERV. I probably see more Mooneys T/O and landings than most. I know alot about the type even though I don't own. Don't shut people like me out because we don't own. My .02 worth. McStealth Quote
N57039 Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Craig, I know your to-do list is long. FWIW I would vote that a "Go to first unread post" on each thread is a high priority and will become a must. I hope it's not a big deal. Quote
M20BE Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 Thanks for putting this up, let me hope i can get a lot of info out of it and have a great time. I don't know why under each post you have this big bar with PM and EMAIL buttons under it, just put it smaller please thanks Quote
