I have been lurking around this forum for about 6 months now. I started with looking to buy an older M20C or E on my own. The more I read about the Mooney's the more I felt like the plane really fit my mission and personality (mechanical engineer with an eye for performance and efficiency). During that process, a co-worker convinced me we should go in together to buy a newer, nicer Mooney. That started the search for a 201.

A co-worker and I spent the better part of the day flying a Piper Archer from East Tennessee to Daytona to look at a nice 201 SE that we were considering buying. After looking at it, we are starting to do the paperwork to make it ours. First stop is the Mooney Service Center at Daytona for a pre-buy and to fix an electric trim issue. Assuming everything checks out, we will be the proud new owners.

I'm hoping to fly the plane back to Tennessee myself. I have about 50 hours in a 182RG, and about 80 hours in a DA20. Combining the complex/high performance of the 182 with the floatiness of the Diamond, I figure I'm well on my way to feeling comfortable flying the Mooney. That said, I would feel more comfortable getting some training in the 201 before heading north to Tennessee. Does anyone have suggestions for a good Mooney experienced CFI near Daytona?

For those interested, there's a link below to the plane we're hoping to buy. Feedback on the plane is welcome as well.

Aaron, nice plan!

PPI is the best way to protect your wallet.  Mooney specific CFI for transition training assures you cover all the important things related to the new to you bird.

The last part of transition training can be done bringing your bird home.  A good IFR X-country if you are IR...

Good luck with your acquisition.

I've heard good things about Robert McGuire. Though I've not used him yet.

I am instrument rated. One of the options I'm considering is taking a CFI from Tennessee with me, and we would fly back together as part of the cross training.

Mike Elliott is on here and is in Tarpon Springs. Instructs a LOT in Mooney's and does transition training for Premier Aviation the Mooney dealer. What's your home field, I'm in Dalton Ga.

Prebuy in the works ?

Someone else has suggested Mike as well. I don't think I have contacted him yet though. I will probably contact him in the next week as the timing gets nailed down.

I currently fly with a great club based out of DKX. TYS is significantly more convenient to home and work, so the Mooney will be based there.

Pre-buy was complete Friday, and we have agreement with the seller as to who is responsible for what. At this point, it's just a matter of waiting on some small repairs. It should be on its way to Knoxville in a couple of weeks.

Nice ! Let's meet up some time. I hope we can get a Ga. Tn. and surrounding states fly in done this summer. Georgia used to do one monthly. Five years ago we had one at Pigeon Forge, the museum and had 15 or so Mooney's.

Whew! That took a while. 1ZX finally made it to Tennessee today. More importantly, we finally got to fly the thing. It is a really great flying plane.

Working out the logistics of getting the plane ourselves just didn't work out. Billy at O'Brien offered to fly the plane to us, so that's the option we went with. I had my first cross-training lesson today. So far, so good. I've got a hand full of questions, but I'll be posting those in one of the more general sections.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help.

I answered one of your questions somewhere else...

you may want to keep them in one place.  Or you will have a lot of people tell you the same thing in several different places.

Enjoy using the search function.  It will probably answer a few things you haven't thought to ask just yet.  :)
