Has anyone installed a vernier throttle control on their M20K? I have a 1982, 231. My throttle control is very sensitive and I feel like a vernier type control would work much better. I've looked on McFarlane and it doesn't seem like they make one for an M20K. Any feedback would be great. Thanks.

I enquired into this last year at Weber, a very reputable MSC. Mooney has a part number for it and I almost had them order me one for my J. Their advice was that the vernier throttle was not as good as what I have. Dorn explained to me but I don't recall the details. I remember it was pricey too, around 700$.

I replaced the mixture, prop, and throttle cables recently with McFarlane which I ordered direct. The old ones were 18 year old ACS - worn and inferior. There was too much play and the mixture cable was extremely stiff when cold.

McFarlane makes FAA-PMA cables FOR Cessna, Piper and a couple of other OEMs but the ones they make for Mooney are not so labeled. For a Mooney, the buyer either sends them the old cable as a pattern for a "owner manufactured part" or provides the critical dimensions using McFarlane's drawing. The A&P logs the installation as owner provided part.

My mixture and prop cables are vernier, of course, and the throttle could have been, McFarlane offers it at a higher price. For my NA IO360 there is little reason for fine tuning throttle. If operating your turbo requires precise partial throttle @ cruise it might be worthwhile.

I could not be more satisfied with my experience with the folks at McFarlane. I removed and measured the old cables and emailed the drawings. The cables were assembled the next day and I received them in less than a week. Then, when they forgot to machine the throttle cable for the limit switch they immediately fessed up, profusely apologized, rushed through a replacement the same day and shipped it next-day-air all on their nickle. (The plane was in my hangar, up on jacks, for annual inspection and getting new windows. The rush was not needed or requested.)

Excellent information. Looks like I gotta get out my old drafting equipment and start drawing. Thank you.

I had a vernier throttle control my my 261 conversion (installed by the Mod Works). I found it very useful in avoiding overboosting on takeoff. But, the weld between the solid portion (nearest the knob) broke when I was taking off from Little River airport. When I tried to dial the power back a bit, the knob and solid part of the shaft came off in my hand. Not good! Fortunately I was only about 50 feet off the ground, and the gear was down. Little River's runway is 5,200 long, and so I cut the mixture, landed, braked very hard, and was able to stop with a few feet to spare I had a new vernier cable installed by a local mechanic a few days later, and had no further problems with the vernier throttle control during the remaining 12 years or so I owned that airplane.

Have you been successful ?

I didn't end up doing it. Other more important projects came up. It's def time for a prop and mixture control though. They are getting pretty loose and I don't think there is anyway to adjust the pressure like the throttle. The prop backs out on me so I always have to keep an eye on the RPM's.

I had a vernier on my 231, loved it. Only time it was a pain was formation flying which I don't do often. Highly recommend it for the 231 engine set up.

Where did you get the throttle for your 231? I talked to my mechanic and apparently they aren't certified for the 231 and he wouldn't install it.

Just sold the bird but it was a Modworks with an STC installed in 2001 on a '79 M20K 231
