New Mooney owner - simple question I hope.  Have an M20F and the top engine cowl assy includes six screws (with thin nickel size washers) that attach it to the chassis.  Need to get a few replacements but cannot find the part number(s) in the maintenance pubs.  Am hoping that the experienced Mooney aviators and mechanics will be able to help me with this one.  Thanks kindly, Ben

Hi Ben.

I believe the screws you are searching for are standard 10/32 x 1/2" stainless screws with matching stainless 10/32 flat washers.  You can purchase these through Aircraft Spruce.  Once on the site, just search stainless steel screws and stainless steel washers.  They have a very nice SS screw kit for you Mooney if you want to replace other screws with new.

I have had to replace mine but can't remember the exact size, I would take the other out and take it to a hardware strore and match it up that way, you still have one right? If not call Lasar and they will tell you off the top of their heads.

HI Ben.  I'm have a new Money also.  I'm Just west of you in Elba.  Aircraft spruce has them.  There are just south of Atlanta.  On my F some of them are 8-32 and some are 10-32.  I think the strip down the middle was 10-32.  Some of the other cowling screws are countersunk.  I ordered several of each as well as washers a few weeks ago.  The washers for the countersunk ones are called tinnerman washers.

For conventional hardware that is stainless steel.  The best local source is a boat supply store like Boat US.  I have found that the quality is proper due to the boat guys requireing it.

Beware of using marine or hardware store stainless contersink screws. Aviation grade CSK screws have the same thread and pich but the counter sink angle is 100 degrees. Non aviation is an smaler angle so the screw heat will not sit flush and may damage your cowl.
