cathead Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 I have a 430W, a stratus 2, and an old collins transponder. What are my options to meet the 2020 requirement if my transponder dies? What's the best way to use what I have already? Quote
Jerry 5TJ Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 The good news is you have a WAAS position source in the 430W. To that you can add a mode S transponder that is ES ready: GTX330ES is one option. There are other mode S transponders that will work, too. Your Stratus2 will continue to provide you ADS-B IN data -- traffic, weather. Or you could add a UAT like the GDL88 and meet the requirements of ADS-B OUT that way. About the same cost either way. cathead Posted September 9, 2015 Author Report Posted September 9, 2015 What is the differnce in the UAT(GDL88) and the transponder? What does it do that the transponder doesn't? Quote
Marauder Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 What is the differnce in the UAT(GDL88) and the transponder? What does it do that the transponder doesn't? The GDL-88 will display weather and traffic on your 430W. The transponder only sends the "out" signal for ADS-B compliance. The GDL-88 sends the "out" and also receives the "in" (weather and traffic). If you have a portable solution, like a Stratus or GDL-39, the "out" piece for either will trigger traffic, i.e. full FIS-B on the portable solution. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
Houman Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 GDL-88 is only good for the Out option as long as you don't need the ES, meaning you are not flying at FL180 or above... From Garmin site : "the GDL 88 offers an affordable solution to reaching compliance. And even if you fly above 18,000 feet, the GDL 88 can still give you all the benefits of ADS-B “In” data – consider pairing it with a GTX 330/33 ES transponder for a comprehensive ADS-B “In/Out” solution. With ADS-B “Out”, the GDL 88 gathers information about your position, track and ground speed from either your existing WAAS GPS source or an optional built-in WAAS receiver" Quote
gsengle Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 Or consider the L3 Lynx all in one box which does it all... More expensive but self contained and very very nice... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1 Quote
Houman Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 May I ask how much the L3 cost install and purchase ?, I'm looking at it... When I talked to L3, the model I needed ( to fly about FL180 ) was a bit too pricey compared to a GTX 330/33 ES and GDL88 Combined. Quote
1964-M20E Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 (edited) Very nice yes I like it but also expensive I thin in the 7-8amu range. Edited September 9, 2015 by 1964-M20E Quote
gsengle Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 The basic one was like in the sixes installed, they have some specials for the first 1000 units... Yes, if your plane has a service ceiling above 18k, you need a 1080es transmitter... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
gsengle Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 Then again my king transponder still had some trade in value Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
gsxrpilot Posted September 20, 2015 Report Posted September 20, 2015 I've got a 530W and will be installing a 330ES for the ADSB out. I'll use ForeFlight and the Stratus2 for the in. Quote
Cbsbama Posted September 20, 2015 Report Posted September 20, 2015 Anyone with experience with the GDL88 with a 530W? I am curious how the weather and traffic displays on the 530. Quote
