Spenscot Posted August 20, 2015 Report Posted August 20, 2015 Does anyone have any good recommendations on how to safely remove old, weathered leading-edge tape? I've read about a 3m adhesive removal product but I'd like to get some tips from you guys or anyone who has done it successfully. thanks in advance Quote
rbridges Posted August 20, 2015 Report Posted August 20, 2015 I've removed a 3M invisible bra from my car bumper. IIRC, something like WD40 should work just as well. I think it's for removing leftover adhesive after the film is removed--not in the actual removal process. I'm not sure how I would tackle it on a plane. When I took it off my car, the paint underneath was in great shape and the tape was still flexible, so I didn't worry about paint coming up with the tape/bra. I've read that applying heat softens the material and helps in the removal process, too. Quote
Releew Posted August 20, 2015 Report Posted August 20, 2015 Get 3M adhesive remover in a spray can. Spray area heavily and cover with plastic (keeps the solvent from flashing off in warm weather). Wait and hour.... Start removal process. Use a Blow Dryer.... NOT heat Gun to assist. It will help maintain elasticity and keep the plastic from constantly breaking. Mineral Spirits works great to get of any residual. Rick 1 Quote
Raptor05121 Posted August 21, 2015 Report Posted August 21, 2015 Also heat it with a heat gun or hair dryer, will make the adhesive very soft. Quote
Spenscot Posted August 21, 2015 Author Report Posted August 21, 2015 Thanks for the responses I will try the blow dryer and plastic wrap method. Quote
M20F-1968 Posted August 21, 2015 Report Posted August 21, 2015 In general, is the use of leading edge tape recommended or is it just a PITA? John Breda Quote
MB65E Posted August 21, 2015 Report Posted August 21, 2015 WD-40 will get the residual gunk of once the layer is removed. -Matt Quote
Releew Posted August 24, 2015 Report Posted August 24, 2015 In general, is the use of leading edge tape recommended or is it just a PITA? John Breda I would not recommend it......... PITA as you say! I recently took the time a repainted my LE. Taped off about 3" back from the LE. Found a rivet line to get a straight run. Use 220 grit Wet Sandpaper to get out all the chips. Came back with etching primer then sprayed with Nason Polyurethane. Pulled the tape off wet and used an aerosol spray call "Fade" to soften the line. Looks really nice and is very easy to spot paint. carusoam Posted August 25, 2015 Report Posted August 25, 2015 Next steps: 1) take photos 2) post on MS 3) ask Marauder to re-orient photos 4) stand by for MS member approval 1 Quote
