Fortunately,

The familiar one (Brian's?) is not the accident airplane. Helpful newspaper(?)

Unfortunately,

The balled up sheet metal one doesn't even look much like a Mooney.

Do we know the 60 yr old pilot, John Douglas Layton?

Still looking to see if he is an MS person...

Prayers for our lost brother,

An accident like this is troubling. The weather didn't look bad. Probably out for a July 4th morning flight like many of us have done. RIP...

There is a Jack D. Layton in Salem listed as an owner of an E model. N number is: N5608Q. Not sure if this is the plane...

http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/NNum_Results.aspx?NNumbertxt=5608Q (other owner name shows John D. Layton).

What a loss. A leader that put his employees and those in need above himself. My hope is that his family and friends find Peace in his life well lived. That is way to young. Be careful everyone. Smooth Blue Skies Jack, you will surely be missed.

The picture of the intact Mooney in Shadrach's post belongs to a local guy here at Fort Leavenworth, KS.  I am not aware that he had sold it, although he is currently deployed overseas and I haven't seen it in a while.  The picture was taken at the fuel point at Sherman Army Airfield.

I think they just took the photo off of 67m20e.com because it is the first hit when one googles 1967 M20E.  It is clearly not the same plane in the wreckage photo.

Indeed, Shadrach.  I am please to report Brian's Mooney is safely in its hangar.
