Door opening after takeoff, has it happen to you before ?, what could I have done better ???

I've never had a door open on takeoff but I did open the door on my M20D right before landing once when I had reason to believe the landing might not end well.

At the risk of asking a dumb question, why was a go-around not an option if you had a feeling the landing will not end well ?, was this a dead stick landing ?

It was dead stick but only because I shut off the engine on final. I had a landing gear issue.
