Anyone installed a KT-74 or TT21/22 with GNS430W / 530W as a WAAS source ?

I am not  looking for recommendation on brand G vs. brand BK or T

Only looking for installation easiness / difficulty and in particular as it relates to the squat or pressure switch

Installed KT74 with 430 WAAS.  Took the majority of the day.  The shop charged me $500 for the install, but I've seen quotes over a grand.  I have manual gear.

Does a manual gear have a squat switch?  I thought it was to let the electric gear know if the plane is on the ground.  Not sure about the wiring, but I do know it requires installation of a new tray.  Earlier, people had mentioned installation of a speed switch, but I was told it wasn't necessary if it's attached to a GPS.

You need to install the new tray only if you are connecting the transponder to the audio panel for altitude deviation alerts and such.  .

It will get the WAAS position from a GNS 430W

Yeah any insight on this would be extremely helpful. I'm purchasing a KT74 tomorrow and I'm not sure what wires I'll need to connect to my G430W. 

There are only  a couple of wires to the Garmin 430W: one for the GPS input and another if you want TIS (not TIS-B ) displayed on the G430W.  You can also connect to the audito panel if you want to use the altitude alert feature.  The connection to the audio panel requires you to use the KT-74 tray.  If you have RG-58 coaxial cable for the transponder, you have to replace it with RG-400.  The STC lists a specific speed switch which sells for about $100.  The wiring pinouts are in the STC; the requirement for newer coaxial cabling is part of the King KT-74 installation manual but not discussed in the STC.

I believe you can use an ASPEN for this air data switch now also, vs having to pipe in still yet another switch.

Still wondering why the equivalent garmin 330ES does not require the switch .

How did they get away with it and king or trigg did not.

One of the guys in my office picked up his J last night after having a KT-74 installed and tied to his GNS530W. No mention of any avionics work other than swapping out tray, connecting GPS and audio panel (altitude deviation alert).

 

His initial PIREP is "Works." Said he saw traffic all over on his iPad running ForeFlight.

You will need the switch for the STC

Whether you go with trig , BK or Avidyne

$100 + shipping

Or you go with garmin and you don't need the switch . But the garmin transponder is $1000 more

I don't get why the garmin unit does not require the switch and the others do

I ordered a KT-74 unit for my Mooney Eagle to replace a KT76C through a reputable shop which has done a few these upgrades.  There is no mention of a switch in the quotation.  Is there an equivalent switch on the long bodies?

Maybe I should have clarified:

If you are simply replacing your KT-76c with the KT-74 ( in order to get mode S and a new platform) , all you need is a logbook entry ( slide in replacement )

If you want ADS-B out from the KT-74, then your shop will be doing it based on Peregrine STC SA00765DE. Your shop will have to comply with the STC documentation and a switch will be required.

IrishTiger, I like Precision at Griffin, GA for avionics work.  I think I've seen your plane at RYY.  I regularly give instruction to the owner of the E model down the row from you.

 

BTW, looks like you work for ExpressJet.  Sorry about that.  JK.  Good friend just started flying the line.  I give him 5 months before he quits.  Hard row to hoe.

Well, I guess I'll give them a call. Epps want's $2300 for the install. I already have the damn transponder!!!!! 

My install in a Piper Cherokee was around $1000 and it took the avionics shop most of a day.  They did software upgrades to my transponer and Garmin GPS, repIaced my RG-58 Coaxial with RG-400, and did the plumbing and connection for the squat switch.  I replaced a King 76C so I did not have to change the tray and only minor changes to the connector.  I did not elect to have the altitude allert installed or TIS connected to my Garmin 430W.

$2300 comes probably from the fact that you have the transponder already. Any shop will want to benefit from the sale of an equipment . If you already have the transponder, you may want to find an IA willing to guide you through the install and sign of on the paperwork.

As far as the work required, the install in very easy but takes some time.

Changing the Coax cable means removing the belly panel and some side panels. That takes some time on a Mooney unless you are ok with broken plastic.

Pulling the few wires from the gns 430 to the tray is easy to do but requires to access the back and that takes time.

My Avionics shop installed the KT74 today.  The biggest pain was not the riveted tray, but it was the circuit breaker which had to be changed from 5A to 3A.  

The coax cable on the KT76C was not RG-400 but there was an RG-400 cable left in the harness from an old DME install. It saved a couple of hours of labor.

My only problem now is that the TIS-A only shows up on the traffic page, not on the map page...

I wish I knew how to do this stuff. I think it would be fun to do and less expensive. Anyone know of any resources out there to learn avionics?
