Shadrach Posted March 18, 2015 Report Posted March 18, 2015 I've been pondering this C,,, but, Why would anyone brag about 134 MPH? = 117 KNOTS? Instead of what should probably be 134 Knots = 155 MPH? He likely made an error, like originally typing the speed in MPH and then changing it to KTS without remembering to then change the suffix. Even the sickest, rattiest, misrigged and runout C model will top 134MPH. Quote
jkhirsch Posted March 19, 2015 Report Posted March 19, 2015 If you do buy it fly into KLEX and I'll fly you up to Morehead. I could probably be convinced to scoop you up and KSDF or KCVG if you pull my arm. Quote

Shadrach Posted March 20, 2015 Report Posted March 20, 2015 ha ha, you a funny guy. i dont have a plane,,, if i did,,, why would i fly to Kentucky so i could bum a ride from you, to get to morehead? BTW i live in Washington state! edit,,, ok , im dumb sometimes... i could fly commercial there and get a ride to the mooney.. thank you for the offer! the more i crunch the ownership numbers, the more im convinced, i cant afford to own! It depends. 172s rent for $165hr dry where I live. That's 3 time what I paid for a 172 wet back in the late 90s.. My F model with a partner runs about $80-$100, without a note on the plane. $1740 for hangar $800 for just the Annual Inspection. This is because my bird is jacked up, decowled with belly and wing panels removed for my who mechanic shows up with a mirror and a flashlight (I give him the use of my creeper ). I do most of the MX under supervision. $2500 minimum for parts. (we've likely done better than that over the life of the plane) $2000 for engine reserves (we don't actually put the money in an account we just understand that both of us need to be ready to come up wit 12K on short notice). $11,000 for gas ($5.50x10x200) $18040/200 = $90.20 to fly 200hrs a year (100hrs each). Actual sunk costs are about $3000 each annually (not including my time) I could fly the a local rented 172 14hrs for what it cost to keep my bird in maintained and sheltered (double that if I did not have a partner). Once you get to 50hrs of flight time, things start to look very different. Plus it's kind of a hastle to do long XCs in a 172, especially overnight or god forbid a weekend. Maybe you could find a non-equity partnership? Quote
carl Posted March 21, 2015 Report Posted March 21, 2015 I flew my M20 out of the pattern for the first time . I have no meaningful information because I was too elated to really take it all in. I climbed to 5000 feet in just a few minutes WOW , a 120 mph climb speed, gear up, flap up . I remembered that , I set 25 squared till 5000. I have a green light on my digital tach at 2450 rpm so I left it there and came back to 24 Mp, or was it 23 Mp the airspeed was reading 170mph I did not do a WOT wide open throttle ,but I guess that will be the next flight. About theflight , I took off from altoona Pa and flew to Clairon Pa, a trip that takes me 2.5 hours driving, flying it took less than 35 minutes . My son goes to college there . what a perfect time machine the Mooney is . To the person who wants to buy a mooney. Do it . if you cant afford it you can sell it ., if you cant afford to fly that month , don't . From the movie the edge "" Never feel sorry for a man who owns a plane"" I feel sorry for the man who doesnt. Carl 10.6 total time in M20 E 1 Quote
bonal Posted March 21, 2015 Report Posted March 21, 2015 Hey Carl congrats on your first departure and yes you are correct these Mooney's truly are time machines. I always love it when a 13 hour drive can be done in just a little over 3 hours and that's in an old C. I'd say have fun but it's too late for that. Quote
garysuperpilot Posted March 21, 2015 Report Posted March 21, 2015 I try to never think about the costs involved with the plane as long as its enjoyed and used. When it becomes a financial burden it'll be sold. Until then I will be thankful I am blessed to have it. Lets face it guys, who else has it as good as us? Its a beautiful day and I'm going flying . 3 Quote
aviatoreb Posted March 21, 2015 Report Posted March 21, 2015 Real world: 12,000' 182 kts @ 14.2 GPH / 194 kts @ 16.4 GPH / 198 kts @ 18.3 GPH 18,000' 196 kts @ 15.3 GPH / 200 kts @ 15.7 GPH I think your rocket is faster than mine - mine is on a 231 airframe so yours is probably a bit slicker, and I have tks and I know that robs a bit. But still - are those ROP numbers or LOP numbers? If they are LOP then I am not far behind you - if they are ROP - then your rocket is waaaaay faster than mine. Do you have the information regarding engine settings please? rpm/map. Quote
