dmevans Posted July 25, 2010 Report Posted July 25, 2010 Hello Everyone,I purchased my F and flew it back to it's new home in California a few weeks ago. One of the first modifications on my list is to upgrade the windows all the way around, including the 201 windshield modification. When upgrading the glass, I would like to get rid of the 3 window layout and move over to the 2 window 201 style layout. I have a few questions with this:1. It's obvious that the beam between the 2 passenger windows must be removed. Is it just a matter of cutting this beam out and installing the 201 glass? Or are there other areas of the fuselage that must be upgraded/altered?2. Does this mod require any sort of STC documentation?3. I read somewhere that pilots can replace their own side windows but not the windshield. With that being said, can I still do this work myself even though parts of the fuselage must be altered?4. Does anyone know of a blog or website that has some sort of instructions or information on this modification? Thanks for your help in advance everyone! -Derek Quote
carusoam Posted July 25, 2010 Report Posted July 25, 2010 Derek, Congratulations on your new purchase. Have you seen the link on side windows posted by George Perry? http://www.mooneyspace.com/index.cfm?mainaction=posts&forumid=1&threadid=55 Look for his photos and his input to get a feel for the size/complexity of the job. dmevans Posted July 27, 2010 Author Report Posted July 27, 2010 Dave, Thanks for the information. I have submitted a 337 to the Oakland FSDO for pre-approval. Hopefully they will be getting back with me shortly. The work will be performed by a good friend of mine who is an IA. -Derek Quote
danb35 Posted July 27, 2010 Report Posted July 27, 2010 If you're following an STC, there's no need for any involvement whatsoever with the FSDO, much less for pre-approval. If you're not following an STC, my understanding is that they should kick it back to you and tell you to use an existing STC. Quote
N601RX Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 I'm not sure if this is correct, but was told that a STC was not required because later Mooneys came from the factory with this mod. Quote
dmevans Posted July 30, 2010 Author Report Posted July 30, 2010 601, You are correct. An STC is not required. However, a field approval (337) is required due to the removal of the sheet metal between the rear windows. -Derek Quote
N601RX Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 I have the parts and paperwork for a plane that I am in the process of buying. It mentions a stiffener that goes along the top of the window also. Quote
tablor Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 dmevans, did you of your mechanic complete the 337 from scratch or did you have access to a copy of someone elses 337 to follow? Is there a Mooney specific bin for people to upload a copy of a 337 for some particular modification? It'd be handy to have a database of Form 337s that people have gotten thru the FAA in the past - does this exist? For instance, I have a drawing and 337 for a camera window beneath the passenger seat that was installed in my plane some years ago. Quote
