Scopes Posted August 26, 2014 Report Posted August 26, 2014 Question for any M20E owners with stormscope - where did you locate the antenna and did you have skinmapping done? I bought an old WX900 and am trying to get it installed but running into issue as there is no skinmapping device available at any avionics shop in my area. I was thinking about mounting under the tail in the current location of the strobe, and removing the strobe by replacing with aveo wingtip LED strobes (I know, that's an entirely different topic). If there is consensus on location which consistently has mapped out as a good spot, I will try it there. Thanks Joel 1964 M20E Quote
jetdriven Posted August 26, 2014 Report Posted August 26, 2014 It's pretty quiet aft of the battery on the belly skin. Mine is about 5" behind the last belly panel. I tried putting it rearmost belly panel but any charge current over 20 amps triggered the wx-1000 to inhibit the antenna. Quote

Thanks Joel 1964 M20E Personally, I believe that a stormscope is a very valuable tool, but I would not install one on any airplane without skinmapping the particular airframe. Have you checked to see if your avionics shop could borrow or rent the skinmapping equipment? The additional cost would be well worth it. Quote
KSMooniac Posted August 26, 2014 Report Posted August 26, 2014 You might be wise to go ahead and install the display and processor, and make sure you have all of the hardware for the antenna installation (doubler, screws, etc.) and fly to a different shop with the proper equipment. That way you can likely get it installed while you wait if you coordinate in advance. Quote
laytonl Posted August 27, 2014 Report Posted August 27, 2014 In my previous M20J, I installed the Stormscope antenna just aft of the small round inspection cover that is half way to the empennage. It needs to be several feet from the battery and other stuff in the avionics bay. I didn't skin map and did the installation myself. It wasn't too difficult and worked great. Lee Quote
Scopes Posted August 27, 2014 Author Report Posted August 27, 2014 Thanks for the advice everyone, I will likely try the aft belly location Quote
FoxMike Posted August 27, 2014 Report Posted August 27, 2014 Static wicks are a good idea if you do not already have them. Quote
