My low voltage diagnosis has reached the point where the alternator is going to have to come off for inspection, repair or overhaul. I have a trip to NJ planned for the end of next week and my time is going to be short. I'm contemplating taking it off, taking it to my local guru for repair and having it re-installed. Anyone have an idea about how much work it is going to be to get the alternator off the back of a Continental engine,

The no belt, bolt-on, in front, configuration looks pretty easy....

Sorry, I don't have the experience. But it does look a lot easier than pulling the generator out of the C. Many things needed to be removed first...?

Good luck,

Phil-Then an hour to reinstall the cowl!! Lol

Shouldn't be too bad on the back side. Local shops are great in pinches like that. They can at least point you in the right direction!

Could be the clutch is starting to slip.  You might spend a little time determining where you can get a replacement for it.  I have not removed one but my wingman has and he did not think it was all that easy.  You might round up someone who has done the job before since time is of the essence.

I got it off, but it was not all that easy. Three terminal, 6 wires; not too bad. Three nuts with limited wrench turning space; only a bit of hard work. Limited space to bring the alternator out; must turn it several ways to wiggle past the cables and wires.
